Security summon staff union leader over strike
November 10, 2022 (WAU) – South Sudanese security agents on Wednesday summoned the chairperson of the University of Bahr el Ghazal staff union, a day after members demanded implementation of their salary adjustments.
Joseph Dario said his woes follow the university’s staff decision to down their tools.
“On Wednesday, I came to the office of the association and got a called from the national security [asking] me to report myself to them. On my way, I found a car on the road with four security men who immediately arrested me,” Dario said on Friday.
He added, “I did not fear and I entered the car with tinted cars. They closed my eyes, my hands and locked me inside [the cell] from 9:00am to 8:00pm”.
Dario disclosed that he was requested to call off the strike or face consequences.
He, however, said the strike reflected the grievances of university staff members.
“I want to say that the strike that happened was not my strike, but it was a strike of university teaching staff demanding their right,” stressed Dario.
The university was established, in response to citizens’ educational needs, in 1991
