November 10, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The Head of the Sovereign Council, on Thursday, relieved the head of the appeal body for the decisions of the suspended Empowerment Removal Committee (ERC) and replaced him with a member of the collegial presidency.

Immediately after the military coup in October 2021, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan suspended the ERC, which is tasked with dismantling the former regime. In August 2022, he appointed Ali Abdel Rahman Mohamed Idris as head of the Appeals Committee for the ERC decisions.

Al-Burhan issued two separate decrees, the first relieved Idris from the head of the appeal committee and the second appointed Tahir Hajar to replace him.

In nearly three months, the sacked official cancelled ERC decisions and restored many pro-National Congress Party (NCP) groups and assets.

There were reports that al-Burhan had been annoyed by Idris’s recent decision to restore the pro-NCP Bar committee.

The move gave the impression that the military leaders were seeking to undermine the draft transitional constitution proposed by the steering committee of the Sudanese Bar Association.
