South Sudan’s relations with Sudan “unbreakable”, says Kiir
November 11, 2022 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has described as “remarkable” his country’s relations with Khartoum, more than a decade after secession.
Kiir, while receiving credentials of Sudan’s envoy to Juba, Amb. Gambal Abdelmageed, said that the two neighbouring countries are bonded by history, culture and geography.
“Firstly, acknowledging how we hold a unique and unbreakable bond with our sister nation, the Republic of Sudan. President Kiir remarked how despite now existing as two nations, we will forever be tied culturally, historically, and geopolitically with Sudan,” a partly reported the state-owned television (SSBC).
The South Sudanese leader reiterated his commitment to continue supporting Sudan in its transitions, citing the importance of reconciliation in achieving peace and stability.
“The strong relationship our two nations have and will continue to build under the tenure of H.E Amb. Gambal shall highlight how prosperous the whole horn of Africa region can be when we work in cooperation,” he stressed.
For his part, the Sudanese envoy said his country was commitment in supporting South Sudan and its leadership in all fields and areas of cooperation to help the two countries deliver and achieve their policies and vision of the two viable states living side by side.
This, he said, helps to pursue mutual benefits and interests in more coordinated ways.
“For us in Sudan and South Sudan, we are one people even though there are two political authorities. We are bound together, just like it was said by His Excellency, President Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit by history, culture, traditions, and geography. These are the strongest bonds that will never exchange for anything else,” said Abdelmageed.
He vowed to work with all leadership to strengthen relations between the two countries.
Relations between South Sudan and neighbouring Sudan have, over the years, witnessed improvement after the two countries mediated peace talks which culminated in a peace agreement with several armed and non-armed dissidents operating with the view of changing the government and political establishments in either of the two countries.
Sudan brokered the 2018 revitalized peace deal between South Sudan and various armed and non-political organizations while Juba mediated talks which saw the signing of the 2020 Juba peace agreement between Sudan and Sudan Revolution Front (SRF), a coalition of several rebel groups from the Darfur region, South Kordofan and Blue states of Sudan.
