UN top official to support human rights promotion in Sudan

November 13, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk has pledged to support the promotion of human rights in Sudan.

The top UN official, according to SUNA, made the remarks during a meeting with the National Human Rights Mechanism in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum on Sunday.

Türk stressed the need for solidarity and acceptance of others to uphold values ​​of human rights in freedom, peace and justice, saying human rights are “indivisible”.

For his part, the National Human Rights Mechanism rapporteur, Juma’a Al-Ayser said the institution is a government agency headed by Justice minister.

He also hinted on the national plan for the protection of human rights and the national action plan to implement the recommendations of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).

Al-Ayser also tackled the axis of refugees, asylum seekers and displaced persons, saying Sudan hosts large numbers of migrants as a transit country.

The rapporteur also pointed to the agreement to establish the country office that was concluded between the Government of Sudan and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in 2019, in addition to the office’s tasks and responsibilities, praising the cooperation of the country office with the mechanism.

Members of the National Human Rights Mechanism who stressed the importance of providing technical and logistical support in training and capacity building.

It was the senior UN official’s first visit to Sudan since he became human rights chief.
