Ethiopia: Opposition says changes in Addis Ababa not satisfactory

April 6, 2008 (Addis Ababa) — Ethiopian opposition parties today said that the changes the ruling party brought in the capital, Addis Ababa, is not satisfactory.
Discussion and debate organized by inter Africa group has been held today among 6 political parties, including the ruling party, Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF).
Representatives of opposition parties said though it is undeniable there is a change in the capital but Addis Ababa is still suffering with poverty, injustice, corruption and irrelevant bureaucracy.
In regard to Addis development EPRDF’s representatives said government works in a frame of that it managed from revolutionary democracy for the sustainable development of the city.
EPRDF representatives added that their candidates are nominated based on their academic achievement, dedication, efficiency and evaluation by public.
If elected, the opposition parties assured that they would be dedicated to curb the above problems the leadership of Addis failed to do so in line with the constitution.
The opposition parties also said their candidates are well educated and efficient to bring change to the problem Addis is facing.
Some 4.5 candidates and 30 political parties will take part in the local and national by- election to go on the coming Sunday.
