Over 265,000 displaced in W. Kordofan, Blue Nile states: OCHA
November 17, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – At least 265,300 people have been displaced due to inter-communal violence in Sudan’s West Kordofan and Blue Nile states since the beginning of this year, the United Nations humanitarian agency (UNOCHA) said.
829 people, it said, were reportedly killed and 973 injured due to conflict and violence.
“The majority of the displaced are in Blue Nile (97,094), West Darfur (93,779), South Darfur (24,176) and North Darfur (14,733). Overall, 288 security incidents (due to localised conflict and armed attacks) have been reported across the country in 2022, including 34 incidents in October,” partly reads OCHA’s report.
An estimated 15.8 million people, according to humanitarian actor, would need assistance in 2023, about 1.5 million higher than in 2022 and the highest in a decade.
The majority of people in need are women and children and over half are children.
About 11.7 million people across Sudan will need food and livelihood support, 11 million will need water and sanitation, and 10.1 million will need health assistance.
“During the first half of 2022, the UN and humanitarian partners reached about 7.1 million people with some kind of humanitarian assistance,” said OCHA.
Also on the rise due to floods are cases of malaria and water borne diseases.
Meanwhile, the Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SHF) allocated $25.5 million to respond to emergencies at the end of October 2022. In addition, SHF is reportedly processing the Standard Allocation and Emergency Rapid Response Mechanisms (ERRM) contingency lines for a combined value of $29.5 million.
