Ukraine to provide 1250,000 tons of wheat in aid to Sudan and 3 other countries
November 26, 2022 (KHARTOUM) – Ukrainian will provide 125,000 tons of wheat to three African countries including Sudan and Yemen under a food humanitarian programme to countries in Africa and Asia.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has worsened the food crisis in Africa, which is already affected by drought and conflicts. The blockade of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports by Russia threatens to trigger a global food crisis, given that Ukraine is one of the world’s main agricultural exporters.
In a meeting held on November 24, the Ukrainian council of ministers approved a decree by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the provision of humanitarian aid to the countries of Africa and Asia.
The cabinet directed to ensure the provision of 125,000 metric tons of wheat or corn to Sudan, Yemen, Kenya and Nigeria, reads a statement seen by the Ukrainian government on November 25.
The government further allocated 900 million hryvnias (over 24 million dollars) to purchase and transport up to 64,000 metric tons to the four countries.
Also, the government tasked the Ukrainian foreign ministry to coordinate the delivery of humanitarian assistance with the UN agencies and relevant authorities in the four countries via maritime ports.
On October 30, Russia blocked the export of agricultural products from Ukrainian ports in response to attacks on its fleet in Russian-annexed Crimea. However, Moscow reviewed its decision under international pressure three days later.
