Salva Kiir urges Sudanese to fully participate in the fifth census
April 11, 2008 (JUBA) — The Sudanese First Vice-President and the President of southern Sudan government urged all the Sudanese to participate the fifth census and to give the correct information.
In a message that will be read in all churches in southern Sudan on Sunday, Salva Kiir says “I urge every citizen, not only to be counted, but also to give correct information. It is a national honour to be counted!”
Kiir “assures the Sudanese that the collected data only will be used for the benefit of the population.”
The 5th Sudan Population and Housing will be conducted for two weeks from 15 to 30 April 2008. It is the first-ever comprehensive and all inclusive population census to be held in the south.
“This is a very important national event, especially for us here in Southern Sudan [….]. It is therefore critical that we do it right and in a transparent manner,” he says.
“If it is conducted well, the population census will provide us the data we urgently need, not only to plan for our socio-economic development, but also to ensure equitable allocation of resources, political representation and participation of our communities.” The head of southern Sudan government stressed.
Kiir also asked the census official to conduct the enumeration operations with ” diligence and respect of our communities.”
The 2008 census will be conducted through the traditional approach. It will be a de facto census and will count all persons who spent census night in Sudan.
Sudan has come out of two decades of civil war. A Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the Government of Sudan and Sudanese People Liberation Movement (SPLM) was signed in January 2005.
Thus Sudan’s population census is needed not only to generate data for socio-economic development planning but also as a tool for sustainability of peace as called upon by the signed CPA.
