Sudan, South Sudan customs sign cooperation agreement

December 1, 2022 (JUBA) –  South Sudan’s Customs Commission and the Customs Corporation of neighboring inked an agreement aimed at opening border crossings between the two countries at Guda area and Kosti Port in order to facilitate trade exchange and goods movement between the two countries.

The signing of the agreement took place in Juba, South Sudan on Tuesday.

Sudan’s Customs Director General Lt. General Bashir Al –Tahir and South Sudan’s Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tomas Jack signed the cooperation agreement.

The two parties, a statement noted, agreed also to cooperate in the field of training and capacity-building of South Sudan’s employees and to provide training opportunities and scholarships at Sudan’s Academy of Customs Sciences.

The border crossings between Sudan and South Sudan have still not been opened, despite the agreement of both governments to open four border-crossing points between the two countries in October last year.

The borders were closed when South Sudan broke away from Sudan in 2011. A year later, the two nations fought over the disputed oil-rich Panthou/Heglig, which lies on their border.
