Bor Town enumerators’ workload high – officials

By Philip Thon Aleu

April 24, 2008 (BOR, Jonglei) — Twenty-two enumerators counting Bor Town Payam villages are severely overworked, census officials have said Thursday April 24. Bor County commissioner says it is due to insecurity in villages outside Bor town that the population is too high.

enumerators_20080424-1.jpgCensus official, Chol Deng said he starts from 7am to 7pm everyday and very tiresome. “I can not rest,” he said.

Thousands of people displaced from their villages in last years’ cattle raiding and children abductions doubted Bor town population several times. The displaced, majority of whom Bor County citizens, failed to return home as security is doubted to normalize.

Bor County commissioner welcomed the observation. “There are no people in villages in Bor county in particular and that is why the population here (Bor town) is too high,” commissioner Abraham Jok Aring told reporters at his office premises this morning. He however, stressed optimism that all will be right.

In a related development, raiders took herds of cattle in Baidit Payam Tuesday and the commissioner believes they are the usual raiders – Murle tribesmen. Asked whether there is any mechanism, he and Jonglei governments have planed to stop child abduction and cattle raiding that appear common phenomena, the commissioner answers “through disarmament.”

Bor community lost about 37 children last year and another four this year (2008) to Murle tribesmen. Thousands of cattle are recorded to have been looted too.

Despite paying enumerators adequate sum of money that would feed them for the two-census weeks, many of them storm Bor town daily to buy food items.

Unlike the first belief that things are enough in the villages, recent years’ famine, drought and insecurity have denied Bor of her rich harvest. Village chiefs thus, have reasons to turn down request made to feed enumerators.

Above all, the census remains peaceful and progressive. Enumerators contacted by Sudan Tribune, in areas around Bor town, maintain that all is “okay.”

Bor Town enumerators’ workload high – officials
    Hi all:

If that is true, I will be very disapointed with those raiders by now. Otherwise better be lie as some people normally love to create problems.

To be honest, Bor civilian are innocent, the problem is incited by officials, and if I were to talk with Murle masses directly, I was going to advice them to leave those innocent Bor civilians alone and shift their focus on those greedy officials who deny them development. Murle civilians must stop abduction of children and begin asking govermnet about hospital and schools promised to be build.

I personally apologize to those Bor who lost their cows, but I don’t apologize to those who hate Murle and accuse Murle falsly.

I want to called both Murle and Bor leaders to come together and find peaceful ground for our people.

I hope others can help me.

    God bless.
