Al-Burhan head of the Sovereign Council receives Egyptian intelligence chief Kamed on January 2, 2023

January 2, 2023 (KHARTOUM)- Egypt’s intelligence chief held a series of meetings with the Sudanese signatories and non-signatories of the political framework agreement on Monday to try to discuss the current political situation in the country.

Abbas Kamel convoyed a verbal to the head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, said a statement released in Khartoum after the meeting.

The Council further added that the message was related to “bilateral relations, ways to bolster and develop them and enhance joint cooperation between the two countries in all fields.”

Thanks to the efforts of the Quad led by the United States in support of the efforts of the Trilateral Mechanism to end the political stalemate in Sudan, the military component and the political parties and civil society groups signed a framework agreement to restore a civilian transitional government on December 5, 2022.

Egypt had declined to join the Quad but its former ambassador in Khartoum was accused of supporting a Democratic Unionist Party faction led by Gaffar al-Mirghani who leads a coalition, Democratic Bloc, opposed to the deal together with two signatories of the Juba peace agreement.

The Bloc’s leaders who met the Egyptian envoy refused to comment after the meeting saying they would issue a written statement later.

The delegation was headed by al-Mirghani and Gibril Ibrahim the leader of the Justice and Equality Movement.

The visiting Egyptian official, also, met with the Forces for Freedom and Change (FFC) delegation including Buthaina Dinar, Maryam al-Mahdi, Babiker Faisal, Omer al-Digair, and Kamal Ismail.

An FFC leader told Sudan Tribune that their delegation discussed the political process and how to end the October 25 coup.

The Egyptian official “announced his country’s support for the political process and (the need) to accelerate efforts to reach a final agreement that includes expanding the base of political participation,” said an FFC leader after the meeting.

General al-Burhan in his speech on the occasion of independence day called on the Sudanese to reunite and accept each other.
