UN welcomes lauch of final phase of political process in Sudan
January 9, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – UN Secretary-General hailed the launch of the final phase of the political process to end the military rule and restore a civilian transitional government in Sudan.
In a statement issued on Monday, Antonio Guterres stressed that the second phase “marks another important step forward towards realizing the aspirations of the Sudanese people for democracy, peace and sustainable development”.
Guterres called to include women, youth n and civil society groups in the process. He further urged the armed groups, signatories of the Juba peace agreement, to join the political process.
The UN mission to support democratic transition together with the African Union (AU), and the (IGAD) support the process involving the revolution’s political groups and anti-coup forces through a tripartite facilitation panel.
The UN chief stressed the importance of strong and coordinated international support for the political process under the framework of the Trilateral Mechanism.
The QUAD, Troika and European Union as well as Arab League diplomats in Khartoum attended the opening session of the process on Sunday and called on the Sudanese stakeholders to finalize an agreement to restore civilian transition in the coming weeks.
The coup leaders reiterated their adherence to the framework agreement signed on December 5, 2022, and vowed to hand it over to civilians.
