Egypt completes Wau power network

April 30, 2008 (CAIRO) – An electricity power network constructed by the Egyptian government in Wau capital of West Bahr Al-Ghazal State, will begin its production of electricity on Thursday.

Three other power networks are scheduled to start their production in the coming months, Rumbek and Yambio in June 2008 and Bor in July 2008. The four projects are part of the Egyptian government commitment to illuminate southern Sudan.

The Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy, Hassan Younis, said that theoperation of the electricity power network and illumination of Wau is the first fruit of the cooperation between Egypt and the Government of South Sudan in the field of electricity power through a grant of 154 million pounds.

In a press a statement issued on Tuesday, the Egyptian minister said that the Egyptian government pledged to implement electricity projects in south Sudan to boost the implementation of development projects in the region.

The implementation of Wau power station — at the capacity of two megawatts – cost around 41 million Egyptian pounds, provided through the donation assigned by the government of Egypt in support of rehabilitation in south Sudan.

Younis said that the electricity project provides illumination of Wau city and meets the demands of around 5,000 to 15,000 families, 80 schools, eight hospitals and several services utilities.

The Egyptian minister referred to agreements reached on construction of three other electricity generation stations in Bor, Rumbek and Yambio towns at the capacity of six megawatts and at the cost of 107 million Egyptian pounds, adding that work is continuing to implement these projects.
