Tripartite panel to hold conferences on eastern Sudan, peace issues
January 19, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – The tripartite facilitation panel will organize conferences to evaluate the peace agreement and settle the eastern Sudan crisis, said the political spokesman of the political process,.
The Joint Coordination Committee of the signatories to the framework agreement and the Trilateral Mechanism on Thursday pursued discussions on the remaining four issues of the final phase of the political process.
The committee discussed plans for the activities related to peace and eastern Sudan, said a statement issued by the political spokesman Khalid Omer Youssif after the meeting.
“The tripartite mechanism will call and facilitate the work of the two conferences, including ensuring the widest possible participation of stakeholders and the forces of the glorious December revolution.
The meeting agreed to start immediately the preparatory steps in order to hold the two meetings before the end of January.
The last phase of the political process includes five issues: the dismantlement of the former regime, the eastern Sudan crisis, a review of the Juba peace agreement and talks with the holdout groups, security reform and transitional justice.
Youssif stressed that the purpose of the two processes is to ensure the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement and remove the political and practical obstacles it faces. For eastern Sudan the conference would lay the right foundations for addressing the issues of eastern Sudan to achieve stability in the region and reach a comprehensive solution, he added.
Two groups of the signatories of the Juba peace agreement refuse to join the political process and two others did not sign a peace agreement with the government.
For eastern Sudan, some tribal components reject the Juba peace agreement and call for a separate process for their impoverished region.
