Sudan and Tanzania agree to foster military cooperation

May 1, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — Sudan and Tanzania have agreed to sign a memorandum of understanding for military cooperation between the two countries at the conclusion of a Tanzanian delegation’s visit to Khartoum lasted three days.

The Sudanese, Minister of National Defence Abdel-Rahim Mohamed Hussein and. Hussein Ali, and his Tanzanian counterpart agreed today in the Sudanese capital to sign a memorandum of understanding of military cooperation between the two countries.

The agreement will be signed within three months.

The Sudanese minister praised the participation of the Tanzanian troops in the hybrid peacekeeping force in Darfur. He emphasised that Africans are able to resolve their problems by themselves. He added that the visit of Tanzanian military delegation opened the door wide for cooperation not only in the military sphere, but as in all fields.

Tanzanian Defence Minister Ali Hussein expressed his pleasure at the level of academic and professional qualification of the Sudanese armed forces and their ability to develop its defense capabilities stressing his country’s desire to train Tanzanian forces in Sudan.

He stressed the strength of bilateral relations and the level of coordination through the participation of the Sudan and Tanzania in restoring the island of Anjouan to the Comoros authorities in the framework of the African Union operation last month.

Sudan Ambassador to Tanzania Abdal-Bagi Hamdan, stressed that the visit of Tanzanian delegation to the Sudan represents an important shift in relations between the two countries, pointing out that Tanzania is a central and highly important in southern Africa and play an important role.
