Jonglei census ends successfully, officials up-hold materials

By Philip Thon Aleu

May 10, 2008 (BOR, Jonglei) – The fifth Sudan Population and Housing Census has ended with above 95% counting done and less constraints experienced during the exercise by enumerators, head of Jonglei State Statistic and Census has said Saturday May 10 here.

But three quarters of counties’ field supervisors and enumerators in Jonglei – contacted by Sudan Tribune, say they will not released returnable materials until payment is accomplished.

State Director Thiong Akuei says the decision to up-hold materials that includes long and short questionnaires was a mistaken message that 50% (1050 Sudanese Pounds) is not paid.

He said 350 Sudanese Pounds is the amount he can pay to each enumerator, an amount enumerators says is merely for the last week of census but does not substantially amount to the remaining 50% told to them by the state director for census.

“It was a mistake that 1050 Sudanese Pounds given to you, is a half of your salary. That is three weeks according to the contract forms you signed,” Mr. Akuei told Bor County census officials today at his office.

Twic East and Bor Counties field supervisors at the State head office also expressed their decision to up-hold census materials until the payment is made.

“I will not release the questionnaire because my enumerators may not like this amount too,” Garang Dau of Twic East County said. “If I were them (enumerators), I will release the forms because it is a very complicated case,” Bor County field coordinator told Sudan Tribune a view that contradicts with his enumerators.’

GOSS has corrupt census hundred percent.

It is so unfortunate for the census enumerators to get that amount of money any more. Let them just except that the Government of Southern Sudan has corrupted the census money in one way or the other. And to prove this, the payment of the enumerators in Southern Sudan is varying. Other are getting higher money and other are paid lower. Who did this?

If things were suppose to be face to face, where will the government of Southern Sudan with its commission for census say money has gone? Of course all of us being the government officer or an ordinary man have a link to media and press making us to know what is there and is not there. The fund brought by the International community was actually a lot but because of no justice in this youngest government of Southern Sudan, the long suffered enumerators have to go complaining. Though they may remain insisting to hand over the result, they are right to do that.

Please and please government of Southern Sudan, you must always keep in touch with the former events and remember the history. It was because of MONEY for the soldiers in Bor not being paid by the government that fuel the rebellion which would have not been possible if they were paid.

TREAT this generation well because they have learn on how to fight for ones right as they learn it from you. You have also to know how to render justice because it was what made you to take arms against the Khartoum government in 1983.

It is so UNFORNATE enumerators give the results and your right will keep searching for who has taken your money and where they are.
