Sudan: Over 418,000 people were newly displaced in 2022

February 21, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – Over 418,000 people were newly displaced across Sudan in 2022 due to conflict and natural disasters like flooding and fires, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.

Most of the displacement, according to IOM’s Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), was registered in Blue Nile, West Darfur and South Darfur states of Sudan.

Most of the new displacement, estimated at about 314,000 people, was reportedly caused by conflict, with 21 incidences reported across Sudan.

Conflict took place in West Darfur, North Darfur, South Darfur, East Darfur, South Kordofan, West Kordofan and Blue Nile states, the DTM noted.

About 103,000 people were displaced due to flash floods or riverine flooding during the 2022 rainy season. Most of this displacement (62%) was caused riverine flooding, while 38% was caused by flash flooding.

Sudan hosted one of the largest refugee populations in Africa, with 1.14 million refugees and asylum seekers as of June 2022, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) said.
