Sudanese opposition NDA accuses government of “deception” over Jeddah agreement
KHARTOUM, Feb 28, 2004 (Sudan Tribune) — The opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has launched a fierce attack against the Sudanese government and accused it of deception and lack of seriousness towards the Jeddah agreement signed recently between the two parties.
The government and the umbrella National Democratic Alliance (NDA) signed the accord in Jeddah December 4, supporting existing peace negotiations with southern rebels and calling for a new democratic Sudan benefiting all political parties.
During a seminar held in Cairo, since three days ago, the deputy NDA leader, General Abda-Rahman Said, rejected the threats made by the Sudanese government to withdraw from the Jeddah agreement, after the NDA had agreed to incorporate the Darfur rebel Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A) into its ranks, during a recent NDA leaders’ meeting in Asmara – Eritrea.
Said indicated the issue of Darfur’s son was a just issue and deserved the understanding of all people in Sudan. He stressed that the NDA was ready to offer support to the SLM/A at all levels.
He said it was unlikely that the conference on Darfur which is scheduled to take place in March in Sudan, would be either crucial or beneficial to resolve the Darfur issue, pointing out that the people in the region had already rejected the idea.
