March 12, 2023 (JUBA) –The Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) special envoy for South Sudan, Ismail Wais has encouraged South Sudanese leaders to work together “in the spirit of collegial collaboration” for the implementation of the September 2018 peace agreement.

He was speaking at a meeting with First Vice President Riek Machar on Saturday.

Representatives from the peace monitoring body (RJMEC), the African Union and the United Nations attended the meeting held at Machar’s residence in Juba.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, the IGAD special envoy for South Sudan said they had a discussion with Machar about the matter and the peace deal in general, adding that they encourage South Sudanese leaders to work together in the “spirit of collegial collaboration” for the implementation of this agreement.

He further disclosed that the representatives of the regional and international bodies also discussed the status of the revitalized peace deal and the recent unilaterally issued republican decree on the relief of Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs and an order swapping the Defense ministry with that of Interior.

Wais assured the people of South Sudan that regional and international bodies are ready to support the smooth implementation of the September 2018 peace deal.

In August last year, the parties to the revitalized peace deal announced the extension of South Sudan’s coalition government for an additional 24 months.
