Sudan’s Abyei crisis to be resolved within 72 hours – Machar
By James Gatdet Dak
May 28, 2008 (JUBA) – The Joint Executive Political Committee between the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) has directed the Special Committee on Abyei to recommend practical solutions on the ground within 72 hours to put an end to the Abyei crisis.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday in Khartoum, the SPLM First Deputy Chairperson and Vice President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Riek Machar Teny, said the SPLM committee he chaired presented practical proposals to the NCP’s component of the Joint Executive Political Committee to resolve the crisis.
He added that the Specialized Committee on Abyei must report back within the next 72 hours with recommendations to the Committee he co-chaired with the Deputy Chairperson of the National Congress Party and Vice President of Sudan, Ali Osman Taha, on how to resolve the crisis practically on the ground.
The SPLM had reportedly, among others, demanded for immediate demilitarization of Abyei area and establishment of its administration.
Meanwhile more than 2,500 displaced people from Abyei have arrived Aweil East County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal state following the recent crisis in the area. The fleeing displaced people have reportedly been sheltering in open spaces and under trees. Only 400 among the displaced have so far received assistance.
They told horrible stories of pregnant women getting birth on the road, missing children and separation of families as they escaped from the fighting.
Heavy fighting erupted in the last two weeks in the oil rich contested area of Abyei between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), resulting into hundreds of civilian casualties, destruction of the whole town and displacement of up to 90,000 people.
The two sides have been exchanging counter-accusations over who was responsible for the crisis.
Machar went to Khartoum on Friday last week and has since then engaged his counter-part, Ali Osman Taha, to find an urgent and lasting solution to the crisis in Abyei.

Dr. Riak,
We left only two days out of 72 hrs and nothing was heard from NCP side regarding the withdrawal of their SAF soldiers.
What if they refuse after 72 hrs?

Waaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!.
Dear Comrades,
Do you think this thing can happen as we want?, No, it is big No, couse NCP as a party is headed by somebody who is sick in heart.
NCP is just for those blood thirst, who do claim arabs identities, but can not, they are denied by the arabs, so they only want to proves to the arabs world that they are arabs, by killing the Africans in their land so as to accomidate those plastine who are in that grave desert of middle east. they beleives in nothing but human blood.
So brothers I personally expects nothing good from the 72 hours given to NCP to thinks about the issue of Abiey.
We needs to have plan “B” before the 72hours results. Becouse as I know it wouldn’t be a good one.
Be bless.
Agut-tunduon.

Dr. Machar,
Stop ur so-called bussiness of madaiting peace between NCP and SPLM regarding the issue of Abyei, all ur efforts are ending with no good out come as we saw it in ur so-called KPA(Khartuom peace agreement) and LRA peace talk in Juba, you are willing but you have no professoinalism in dealing with maters like brings two parts together(technical-Know-How), so pliz leave it to those who know it and do not wast the money of GoSS by ur useless trips to Khartuom and Back to South, these money would have do other bussiness for the people of south Sudan.
