UN right body expands expert’s mandate to abuses committed during DAF-RSF conflict
May 11, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – The Human Rights Council, on Thursday, expanded the mandate of its expert on human rights in Sudan to include violations committed during the ongoing conflict between the army and the paramilitary force.
Accordingly, the expert will now have a broader scope of responsibility to monitor and report on all human rights violations and abuses since October 25, 2021, including those committed during the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF.
The Council expressed grave concern about the escalation of violence in Sudan and called for an immediate cessation of violence and establishing safe humanitarian access.
The resolution was adopted by a vote of 18 in favour, 15 against, and 14 abstentions, with several Arab and African countries abstaining or voting against.
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to support Sudan’s transition towards a civilian-led government. It condemned sexual and gender-based violence, attacks on humanitarian workers, health workers, premises and members of international organizations, civil society organizations and the diplomatic community.
On December 16, Radhouan Nouicer was appointed as the designated Expert on human rights in Sudan by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, to monitor the human rights situation in Sudan after the October 25, 2021 coup and excessive use of violence against pro-democracy protesters.
