SPLM says Abyei displaced should regain home swiftly

June 2, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement stressed (SPLM) on the need to return the displaced population from the disputed area of Abyei following heavy fighting between the two partners of the national unity government.

Heavy fighting erupted in the last two weeks in the oil rich contested area between the SAF and the SPLA, resulting into hundreds of civilian casualties, destruction of the whole town and displacement of up to 90,000 people, according to the United Nations.

SPLM deputy secretary general for northern sector, Yasir Arman told Sudan Tribune that talks with the National Congress Party on Abyei focus on the urgent humanitarian situation of the displaced persons from Abyei.

The SPLM accuses the NCP of expelling Abyei population to replace them by Misseiriya Arab population.

He also added that the current talks deal with this pressing issue of the displaced from the one hand and ways to implement the Protocol of Abyei on the other hand. Nonetheless, he declined to give further details on the ongoing negotiation.

Arman further said that the two parties have formed a restricted committee to work out propositions for a meeting of the NCP-SPLM Executive Political Committee to be held next Wednesday.

The meeting will be headed by the Vice-President Ali Osman Taha and the southern Sudan government Vice-President Riek Machar.

The parties could reach an agreement on an interim administration charged with the resettlement of the displaced population as well as the reconstruction of the area. If there is an agreement on the principle it seems there are divergences on the details of this administration.

However, the SPLM also wants the full implementation of the conclusions of Abyei Boundary Commission and the demarcation of the nine Dinka Ngok chiefdoms border as defined by the experts, a matter that the NCP rejects.

The borders of the region were left undecided in the peace agreement that ended two decades of civil war fought along ethnic, religious and ideological lines and complicated by oil. The deal gave south Sudan semi-autonomous status and created a coalition north-south government.

Riek your unable to deal with LRA how can your attempt to act on behalf of SPLA regarding the border issue,i don’t think South will have access to her part of Abeyi if the case is left to the hands of people like Riek.We need a real person who work for the better future of South, but not those who are having big hearts of leadership, selfishness, tribalism and arrogant.where are the real people (SPLA leaders) who fought for the future of South ?,i mean those who have never intend to act against SPLA since the formation of SPLA.

what NCP are doing in Abyie will later result in total extinction of the masseriya arab from Abyei. Once SPLA begins to retaliate there will be great lost from Masseriya Arabs, to avoid all this from Happening, Let the messiriya understands that they have been used as a curtain, when things become worse, those NCP will run away to their homeland of Somaliya(Northern region).

Please Messeriya learn from the DARFURIS CRISIS, during the north south war, Dafuris were used against
southerners, but later when their eyes were opened, NCP began to kill them.

therefor Messirya and Dinga Ngok, try to resolve this crisis by yourselves peacefully and live together in Harmony AS YOU USED TO BEFORE.

I would like to let the GoSS know that people like Dr. Riek are not trustworthy in dealing with the issues like peace in Sudan. Riek is lacking a technical-Know-How so he should not be the first choice for the issue of Abyei, otherwise Abyei will get less of its right in the land claim. Dr. Riek failed several time in his attempt to solve problems in the South in many occasions Eg. bringing peace in Jonglei state, LRA/Uganda Peace and so more. these are the clear evident which will let the GoSS learn about Dr. Machar.

    Dear all,
If all our leaders, friends and the civilians work together as a team,Abyei issue would easily be resolved.ARABS continue to lobby for support and combine their efforts inorder to sabotage whatever was agreed upon ABYEI AMICABLY! BUT right now am seeing a sign of ‘defeat’on their side which they cannot admit becoz oil site is unimaginable for an arab to reliquish regardless of rights and protocols laid down.i encourage Dr.Riak to continue finding ways to bring abyei issue into a final cure-ABC SHOULD IMMEDIATELY BE IMPLEMENTED!
BUT NO ROOM TO RENEGOTIATE CPA!
please GOSS DO SOMETHING TANGIBLE TO HELP THE SUFFERING CHILDREN AND WOMEN IN ABYEI.
