Sudan says ready for talks with Darfur rebels but not with JEM
June 3, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese Presidential Adviser, Mustafa Osman Ismail, today stressed the readiness and preparedness of the government to move forward in the peace process for achieving security and stability in Darfur with the parties that are ready for peace and a peaceful solution.
However Mustafa, reaffirmed what can be defined as new political line of his government in the peace talks and ruled out talks with the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM). He told the UN envoy for Darfur that Khartoum considers rebel JEM as a movement terrorist movement and therefore they would not negotiate with.
Since the JEM attack on the Sudanese capital on May 10, Khartoum says it would not negotiate with the group because it does not fight for Darfur plight but for regime change. Nonetheless, Observers says the government would change it mind in the near future about the issue.
The Presidential Adviser, who was speaking to the press following a meeting with the UN envoy for Darfur, Jan Eliasson, urged the United Nations to press the Chadian government to stop its negative interfering in Darfur crisis.
He also hailed efforts exerted by Eliasson and Salim Ahmed Salim, in the framework of the joint initiative of the United Nations and African Union to bring peace to Darfur.
Eliasson told the media yesterday that he and the AU envoy would be replaced by a UN-AU envoy and added he would be an adviser for the new joint envoy. It is not clear whether Salim would also be appointed as adviser or not.
Mustafa said that Sudan is still committed to the UN-AU peace initiative. But he added that there is a need to some progress on the ground in this direction. He further said that there are responsibilities on the international community, major countries and armed movements in Darfur to reach to settle this five years conflict.
He explained that the government will discuss with the Security Council delegation that is visiting the country these days, the importance of supporting the initiative of the United Nations and African Union to achieve success on the ground.
Mustafa expressed hope that the rebel movements show greater flexibility and respond to peace proposals. He also expressed regret in this regard over the position of Abdel-Wahid Mohamed al-Nur, who despite all contacts and envoys did not show any readiness to participate in peace process.
The Presidential envoy is expected to fly in the coming days to press the French government to put pressures on the SLM leader to take part in the peace talks with Khartoum.
