May 30, 2023  (JUBA) – Kenya and South Sudan have joined forces to address the ongoing conflict in Sudan, emphasizing their commitment to providing regional attention and support. This collaborative effort brings hope that coordinated actions can alleviate the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, and its surrounding areas.

Deng Dau Malek, South Sudan’s acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, expressed on Tuesday that South Sudan is working closely with Kenya, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Uganda to ensure the implementation of the ceasefire agreement signed by the warring parties in Saudi Arabia.

Malek acknowledged the unfortunate circumstances in Sudan and highlighted the significance of the ceasefire, as it would grant access to vital services for the civilian population currently confined to their homes.

Malek further revealed that President Salva Kiir is actively coordinating with regional leaders, including President William Ruto of Kenya, to ensure that Sudan’s situation receives the necessary attention from the region. The leaders are committed to addressing the conflict through various means.

During a meeting held on Sunday, May 28, 2023, in Nairobi, Malik Agar, the Deputy President of the Transitional Sovereign Council of Sudan, engaged in talks with President William Ruto. President Ruto expressed his concerns over the unfortunate situation in Sudan and highlighted the efforts already made towards achieving peace and stability. Kenya stands firmly committed to supporting the resolution of the conflict in any way possible.

President Ruto and President Kiir have been entrusted by the regional bloc IGAD, alongside other heads of state, with the responsibility of reconciling the conflicting parties. Gen Abdel Fattah al Burhan appointed Agar as the Deputy President of the Transitional Sovereign Council on May 19, replacing Rapid Support Force commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

South Sudan and Kenya, among other countries in the region, are actively supporting efforts to bring an end to the Sudan conflict. They have urged the warring factions to seize the opportunity presented by the latest talks and move towards negotiation for a permanent cessation of hostilities.
