Sudanese presidency to ink Abyei agreement
June 7, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese presidency is expected to adopt tomorrow an agreement over the disputed area dealing with the establishment of an interim administration and the return of the displaced population.
The Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir and his first deputy Salva Kiir Mayadrit are expected to ink on Sunday a deal establishing an interim administration for Abyei. The accord also includes a number of measures to facilitate the return of displaced people following last May clashes.
Differences between the former foes over Abyei border backs to Nivasha talks. The parties thought resolving the problem by agreeing to refer the issue to a five members commission of international experts. But following the signing of the peace agreement Khartoum rejected the conclusions of the panel of experts.
The disputed region is inhabited by Dinka Ngok and Misseriya tribe. The definition of border made by the Abyei Boundary Commission was the first ever serious attempt to draw up the north south Sudan boundary.
The existence of oil in the contested area has aggravated the conflict over the rights of each group in the area. Khartoum claims that Bahr al-Arab (Kiir River) is the border line between North Bahr al-Gazal and South Kordofan states while Juba says it goes deep beyond the river.
The reached agreement means to defuse the tension between the signatories of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement till the final judgement by an international arbitration on the exact border of Abyei. However the parties have to decide over the members of this new arbitration body.
Al-Dirdiri Mohamed Ahmed, NCP member o f the joint committee said today that the two sides agreed to resort to an international arbitration with specialization on this matter.
The interim administration would exercise its authority over an interim border.
Yasir Arman told Sudan Tribune that the main purpose of the current deal is to avoid the permanent displacement of Abyei population.
Next year, the country will witness the running of general elections. Many of the displaced population of Abyei had just returned from northern Sudan and elsewhere to take part in the census of April.
Following the fighting between Sudan Armed Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army tens of thousands fled Abyei last month. The two armies massed troops in the region and raising fears that a new war could start in the Sudan.

Now, Salva Kiir , Riak Machar and the entire SPLM leadership will show us that that they are leaders of South Sudanese people, if our people return to Abyei. if not, they are weak and hopeless.

I appreciate your advice to him but it appears to be waste of time and energy to talk to some one who does not change after the advice. That is How Equatorians behave!

Your comment is very nationlaistic and vivid. This is the way a person who possess certain percentage of patrotism in his blood should talk. There is no doubt that a lot of people who want our country to develope in any levels of aspects are worried about the way we handle our political ambitions. Few days ago, one good and patriotic southerner came to ask me whether I have an idea about how we going to solve our differences. I told him that, the only reasonable solution is when southerners come to the sense of putting difference behind them and resort to reconciliation.
He responded by saying that, what I said was the only ligitimate answer. He went ahead and added that, if Nuer, Dinka and Murle don’t reconciled, there will be no peaceful ground to achieve what we want. And his statement took me all the way down because I feel that, as reality of the fact.
Relating to your comment, we all know in democracy that, it is not politically healthy enough to see things flowing in wrong direction and we have to stay without saying a word, but, though we want to criticize our leaders, yet we need to preserve special respect for them. It is uncivilized to use words that defame or demean the dignity of our president(Kiir) or his vice(Riek) or others in the leadership. We need to recall this kind of simple principle each time we debate on internet or talk to them face to face.
We should learn or feel achievements these leaders have brought into our backyards, we need to appreciate them very very dearly. Now Dr. Riek shown very winning card again by nearing to the point of reaching peace with those hyenas of Khartoum. Kiir also help in nurturing the process of this very peace. And that is what I said last month that Kiir and Riek are good to retain their sits and given time to lead our nation during this crutial moment.
I really do appreciate your advice I hope all of us choose to be at this corner.
