South Sudan’s vice president urges Muslims to pray for peace in Sudan

Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi Akol speaks to reporters in Juba, January 13, 2023 (PPU)

June 28, 2023 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s vice president, Hussein Abdel Bagi Akol, called upon the Muslim community in the country to pray for peace in neighbouring Sudan.

Recognizing the unfortunate situation caused by the ongoing war, Akol emphasized the importance of using the occasion of Eid al-Adha to pray for the beloved country and the prosperity of its people.

He highlighted the Islamic teachings of peace, hope, forgiveness, reconciliation, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, urging the faithful to promote these values.

Akol’s message was echoed by South Sudan’s presidential adviser on security affairs, Tut Gatluak Manime, who encouraged the Muslim community to join hands with their Sudanese brothers and sisters in fostering peace, tolerance, and a shared identity as Sudanese rather than divided by tribes.

He assured the refugees that South Sudan considers them part of their own, providing support for settlement and normalcy.

Manime emphasized that cooperation and unity among all, regardless of their backgrounds, are vital in addressing the current situation and achieving lasting peace, with President Salva Kiir Mayardit actively working towards stability.

The calls for peace in Sudan come following separate announcements of ceasefires by rival Sudanese leaders.

Gen Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, chairman of the Sovereign Council of Sudan, unilaterally declared a unilateral ceasefire, preceded by a similar decision from Gen Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Force. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to self-defence while striving for a peaceful resolution.
