Two explosions kill three in Eritrea

ASMARA, March 2 (AFP) — Two explosions believed to be caused by bombs killed three people at Tesseney, a town in western Eritrea close to the border with Sudan, UN sources said Tuesday.

The blasts overnight Monday targetted a hotel in Tesseney, two UN sources said. The cause of the explosions and the identity of the three victims were not known on Tuesday evening.

Eritrean authorities were unable to confirm reports of the explosions, which took place in a town used by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees as a transit point for Eritrean refugees returning from neighbouring Sudan.

“I have heard that there were some kind of bombs,” Yemane Gebremeskel, the cabinet director in President Issaias Afeworki’s office told AFP.

Two bombs fitted with timers blew up in Tennesey at the end of November, but caused no casualties.
