Envoy calls for speedy implementation of peace deal

July 9, 2023 (JUBA) – The Norwegian envoy to South Sudan, Linken Nymann Berryman has urged the Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) to focus on the difficult tasks and expedite the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS).

The envoy said the Norwegian Government and other international partners have been resolute in supporting the peace process for the people of South Sudan.

“Norway is committed to stand with the South Sudanese people working for a peaceful and thriving future for all,” said Berryman.

According to the envoy, aid arms funded by his government have positively provided humanitarian assistance and long-term development collaboration.

South Sudan gained independence from neigbouring Sudan on 9 July 2011 as the outcome of a 2005 peace accord that ended Africa’s longest-running civil war.

Independence did not, however, bring conflict in South Sudan to an end. Civil war broke out in December 2013 when the country’s president fell out with his then vice president, leading to a conflict that displaced over four million people.

In August 2018, a power-sharing agreement was signed between the warring parties, bringing an end to the bloody civil war that killed an estimated 400,000 people.
