One SPLA soldier killed during cattle raid fighting in Lakes state

By Manyang Mayom

June 14, 2008 (RUMBEK) – One Sudan People’s Liberation Army soldier was killed by cattle raiders in Lakes State when the soldiers tried to separate warring clans.

Marik Nanga Marik, the Deputy speaker of Lakes state Legislative Assembly told reporters that cattle raiders killed one SPLA soldier during clashes in Toch between two clans of Panyar and Aliap on Wednesday June 11, 2008.

Besides the killed soldier, as result of the confrontation between the SPLA and gunmen in Toch, one young girl killed and another boy wounded. Also the fire exchange killed about 80 head of cattle and wounded 100 cows, said Nanga.

Furthermore, Marik said that Lakes state Assembly decided in an emergency meeting to form a fact finding committee to identify the cause of the clash and determine the responsible of June 11 troubles.

The regional parliament also called on the warring clans to restrain from killing each other and respect the authority of the state represented among others by the southern Sudan army.

The state legislators said the Lakes government should order the army and organized forces to carry out their duties with responsibility.

This is not the first time Lakes state cattle raiders shoot the SPLA soldiers in the cattle camp. Last year five SPLA soldiers were shot death by the cattle raiders in Rumbek east only.

Marik said that the decision of president of the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS) to disarm civilians in all ten states of Southern Sudan is the right solutions that can avoid inter-clans fights in the cattle camps.

    SORRY: SPLA leadership

Guns are meant for soldiers not for civilians and a big lost ever encountered every year by SPLA . Discipline the civilians by gun shot otherwise soldiers would all die one by one till no one fight the greatest attack.
See the far problems as you keep solving the nearest.

I don’t understand what is use of ears and rules in particular states which are still living behind the human characters.Goss has introduce the issue of disarming since months ago yet people are crying for another disarming how many guns are own by each individual in those areas?.I warn that if Goss is willing to make a better life for those people,it is recommanded that each family must hand 3 guns to Goss during the disarming time

    SHAME ON YOU “GAZZALIANS”

Are you still scrumbling over mega resources when your educated, ranked advantaged sons are pocketing funds meant for development and projects.

Why should you kill the most expensive (SPLA) soldier whose life can be valued to 1,000 civilians in your community?
Why can you respect your son(president)?
you can easily be equated to being foolish community if you never reprimand.

    foolish backwards

It is wonderful for cattle raiders to kill one SPLA soldier. Cattle raiders have right over the killing of SPLA soldier because they wanted to express the reluctance of Goss in implementing their policy of disarmament.

Cattle raiders are scientist and they wanted to prove whether SPLM/A can implement their policies or not, that was the reason for carrying out the previous experiment where 5 SPLA soldiers were killed. What did you think was the reaction from Goss? The answer was disarmament which was not implemented.

Now that another experiment is done by cattle raiders, what do you suggest will be the response from the Goss or SPLA? Automatically, the answer will be disarmament which again will not be implemented.

Calm down guys and wait soon Researchers (cattle raiders) will come up with their conclusion after their series of successful experiments on Goss or SPLM/A. They (cattle raiders) are scientist and they need to come up with experimental conclusions not theoretical about the Goss

    Dear Gazzalians,

We left towns for 21 years only to stop killing of innocent people. Now after we acheived our dreams you turned guns that were used for liberation purposes to yourselves and your liberators, what a big shame???.

Why do you killed the SPLA soldier? he was as innocent as one of those peoiple who were killed by mundukurs long ago.Do you see that now???. A liberator, just your liberator why killed himmmmm????.

Please change and give out your illegal arms for the betterment of our new Sudan, be doing things the way your neighbors and friends do. All are loughing at you from east to west and from south to north, just becouse you are suppose to take examples from former leaders thee….who did not divided themselves the time they were leading the movement. Do you see that clearly???.

    Be bless,

Deng Akol Agut-tungduon,aman far away from tribalism.

Lakes State is led by a Village Chief where nothing is implemented as said or designed.A very inconsistent Village Chief!
Disarmamnent was discussed and passed by GOSS in Juba. Why announced it to Public in Lakes State?
Governor Awet Akot and his brother Bol missed the point when they favoured among some selected communities’ members of Lakes State. His own community of Cueibet -Awet have not been disarmed. When Jesus started Preaching his Gospel, he started in his own tonw of Nazaret. Awet can’t preach disarmament in other counties without his county.

SPLA soldiers do not know that cattle keepers are wild more than them. They(cattle keepers)aim to kill. Just an arm raised is someone dead and that is why most of their fights end up more than imagineable number killed as was the case between Luacjang of Warrap and Pakam of Lakes States on the 22nd April 2008.

My piece of advice to SPLA soldiers is that they need to forcefully disarm these guys and if they can, some of them captured be taken to Abyei, where a man becomes a man. Some captured be taken and trained as soldiers, because they want to be soldiers, that is why they are carrying guns.

SPLA soldiers must stop their lophole stores of guns not to get into civilians’ hands. Where do they get new Brand AKM 47s?

Some GOSS officials are part of these chaos in these states of Bahr el Ghazal. In Warrap and Lakes State, it is worse than anyway else. Lohukos in their Torit are doing the same. The whole thing is madness of cattle keepers.

Government of Lakes State is too backward to do anything for such unrest at the moment. Security issues are never announced. After Juba meeting on disarmament, an official of Lakes State Government went to Radio Rumbek 98 FM without shame that we are going to disarm all the cattle keepers and so on and forth. Can someone possibly imagine if these guys will accept to surrender their guns?

This situation of guns in the hands of civilians will be a hard nut to crack. They were almost disarmed in 2006 to early 2007, that everyone almost gave in his guns but later on there were discoveries that some communities were immuned to surrendering their guns because they have their sons in GOSS who run it.
Minister for Interior is a part of this problem. Director General in Road and Transport is also another junk in this business. He was in Lakes State for more two months (December 2007 to ends February 2008) because his sister’s son was a victim of these cattle raiders crime (killed). He made sure that his sister’s son killer was tried with his other paternal uncle’s son to fit into his sister’s dead son as a revenge. The two gentlemen were taken to Wau for execution which did not happen because two persons can not killed because of one person. The murderer accepted that he has killed Mr. DG sister’s son. His other paternal son was to be a victim of revenge. SO where do we go here?

    God Save South Sudan.

The government of Lakes State just need to be tough in dealing with such an appalling crisis of shooting and cattle raiding. There is only one thing which our chaotic behavior will bring and that is destruction and discouraging investors to invest in the state. Who will suffers?, the state residents and the economy and by the end of the day we will be able to tell others that where there is fighting there is no development.I wish all governors were Kuol Manyang Juuk of Jonglei state, tough and patriotic.

    God bless you all.
