South Sudan cabinet adopts Gender Policy for the region

June 15, 2008 (JUBA) — The autonomous Government of Southern Sudan on Friday passed a Gender Policy for the region to address issues of inequality related to gender.
Presented by the Minister of Gender, Social Welfare and Religious Affairs, Mary Kiden Kimbo, the document highlighted gender issues in relations to girl-child education, maternity health care, poverty, food security, access to land, gender-based violence and decision-making in public and family affairs.
In defense of the document, Minister Kiden argued that there was need for a gender policy framework to reverse history of discrimination against women in Southern Sudan particularly by cultural and customary norms of life that “dehumanize and subordinate” women in public and family life.
The document discourages early marriages of young girls and promotes easy access to education by girl-child. It also calls for giving special consideration to establishing maternity health care centers up to the Buma (local) level of governance in order to avoid numerous deaths of women during child delivery in the region.
While praising the SPLM Chairman Salva Kiir Mayardit for his commitment to fulfill the 25% allocated to women in accordance with the provision in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), the document calls for establishment of special programs that would empower women to create enabling environment and potential for them to qualify in occupying such allocations.
“Gender equality cannot be achieved without women empowerment,” argued the Gender Affairs Minister Mary Kiden, adding that women have only occupied an average of 18% out of the 25% allocation per the CPA.
Minister Kiden however commended certain state governments in the South for fulfilling the allocation and sometimes exceedingly up to 30%, which she said was the universal agreed upon percentage of special allocation for women.
After it was passed by the Council of Ministers under the chairmanship of the region’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit, the Gender Policy document will then be presented to the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA) for final endorsement before it comes into effect.

Good idea i support you 100% in fact we can see that womens are not well treat on Goss level mean most of them has no access due to their cultural background and i recommand that Mr president kiir need to ensure that his idea of giving them 25% must be occupied by womens not mans.Keep the spirit Kiden,where is rebbacca let her contribute in this issue of womans by supporting the positions to be fullfil by womens.

Actually you have made very great pavement for our sick gender inequality in Southsudan leave alone northern Sudan which is the worst in world records.
Miss Kiden, there are other three important things that I need you to emphasize:-
1- You need to issue a law to that reduce bride price from Dinka Bor, Nuer, Murle and Dinka Bhar El Ghazel. Currently, Dinka Bhar El Ghazel pays from 10 to 150 cows depending very much on the bridge beauty. Dinka Bor pays from 20 to 45 cows or $ 20,000. Nuer pays from 30 to 50 cows( I gethered this randamly from people from those tribes). Murle pays 50 cows in arranged marriage and 65 cows when the girl is eloped. All this are unacceptable as we know there is no existing measured price for any human being.
2- You need to set some rules that limit farther or mothers from forcing their daughters to marry people who are not of their choices because many girls lost their lives through such barbaric conducts.
3- You need to set clear and legal marriage age.
I know you Kiden will read that since you have been my forum member in Sudan discusion.

It is time , we have to accelerate at balance speed, both organs to feel satisfy.
let me give big big thanks to Mr. James James, In India now marriage age is very important, it will stop young girls from early pregnancy, here in INDIA 20 yrs is the mixm age for girl to get marriage or to interfer in what is called SEX, there is LAW for any person who broked,he would be in prison and to pay fine to government.
Secondly Mr. James J. let us know that there are Traditional marriage , to avoing contradiction on others, we need to focus on what is call LIVING STANDARDS to allow intermarriage among different tribes , any way am so most thankfull for your opinion.

do gender allow inability?
there are situation that don’t allow gender.otherwise it is good to pass it.

it is like you are trying to list the cattle keepers? and so,than you have not completed the list of cattle keeping tribes in the southern Sudan as amatter of fact, you are trying to expose bad traditional practise of other communities which is not your area of concern.
