Veteran S. Sudanese politician appeals for support for Sudan
August 1, 2023 (JUBA) – A veteran South Sudanese politician has called for support to end the conflict in Sudan, warning the crisis could divide the country.
Bona Malwal Madut on Tuesday meeting Sudanese nationals at his residence in Juba.
“What is happening in Sudan is something nobody appreciates. They need support in all aspects. They need political support for their differences and to stop war which is destroying their country. Those who have fled the country for safety need to be assisted to find where they can settle, find a job and make them feel at home,” he said.
Madut, a former presidential advisor, said power struggles sparked off the crisis.
“What is happening in Sudan is not just about military power contest and fighting, but something bigger. It is a collapse of the Sudanese state and disintegration,” he added.
The conflict between the Sudanese army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Force (SAF) since April 15 has killed more than 3,000 civilians and displaced nearly 3 million, the United Nations says.
Up to 25 million people in Sudan reportedly need humanitarian aid and protection.
