Chad working on uniting Darfur rebel factions – Sources
June 23, 2008 (N’DJAMENA) — Darfur rebel groups meet in Chad in a bid to finalize a unity agreement. The unity talks are sponsored by the Chadian president, Sudan Tribune has learned.
The initiative is sponsored by the Chadian president Idriss Deby who voiced full support to the factions in their reunification efforts.
The rebel groups included Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) led by Khalil Ibrahim, Sudan Liberation Movement – Unity Command led by Abdelalla Yahya Ahmed, Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) faction led by Khamis Abdalla Abakr and United Front for the Resistance led by Bahar Idriss Abu Garda.
Earlier this month in Tripoli, Abdelalla Yahya Ahmed of SLM-Unity and Bahar Idriss Abu Garda of UNFR agreed during talks in Tripoli sponsored by the Libyan government to merge their two groups by the end of July.
JEM had a hostile position towards Abu Garda, who breakaway from the movement last year. But it seems his recent agreement with Ahmed will help him to secure a place in the expected alliance.
On 30 June 2006, Khalil Ibrahim, Khamis Abdalla Abakr, and Ahmed Ibrahim Diraig of Sudan Federal Democratic Alliance established in Asmara the National Redemption Front (NRF), as an instrument for coordinating political, military, and diplomatic initiatives.
In 2006, Eritrea sponsored the establishment of the NRF to bring the rebels for talks with Khartoum in a bid to rescue the Darfur Peace Agreement signed only by Minawi on 5 May 2006. However the front failed due to difference over the leadership of the NRF.
Ibrahim led an attack on the Sudanese capital last month that took the government and international community by surprise. However Khartoum repulsed the attack and accused Chad of backing JEM in its attempt before severing ties with its western neighbor.
It is also not clear whether the meetings are related to a secret visit to Chad by Sudan’s senior presidential assistant Minni Arcua Minawi who is also the leader of a faction of Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) which signed a peace agreement with Khartoum two years ago.
Minawi has denied visiting Chad or defecting from the government but multiple sources confirmed to Sudan Tribune that he arrived there over the weekend.

Congratulation President Derby for attempting to unit the people of Darfur.
Unless they (Darfuris) unit under one common goal that is to liberate their people from the bondage of slavery from their religious mate (Arab), They have and will never succeed at all.
We Southerners although there were few cases of disunity were determined to work together under one movement SPLM and we managed to protect our selves and our civilains from Arab just because of unity we had during the war.
I have found this party which will unit all the Darfuris where ever they are, Darfur People Coalition Movement (DPCM). This party will merge you together under your common objectives.
thanks,

Dr. Peter Kuot’s Special thanks to Chad.
This is what I wrote about yesterday. Now it seems God took it as a prayer from me when I wrote a comment titled “Darfur rebel movements are facing a problem of no proper backup” yesterday.
There is no revolutionary war that can succeed with out a proper backup from the neighbouring countries. Take an example of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) of Uganda, This is one of the most useless rebel movements that has taken such a lengthy time trying fight through a way leading to hell. However, Khartoum was behind the LRA but SPLA was at the border between Uganda and Sudan.
I am very much pleased with what the Chadian president Idriss Derby is doing. Please H.E combine all those factions and unite them into one strong determined movement.
