Burhan embarks on official visit to South Sudan
September 4, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – The Chairman of the Sovereign Council, Lt Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, embarked on Monday morning for Juba, the capital of South Sudan, as confirmed by an official statement from the Sudanese presidency.
During this visit, Al-Burhan will discuss with President Salva Kiir Mayardit bilateral relations (…) to “address mutual concerns, and delve into developments within Sudan’s current situation,” read the statement.
One of the topics expected to be raised by al-Burhan with President Kiir is the attacks by the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) under Abdel Aziz al-Hilu’s leadership on the Sudanese army in South Kordofan.
Before departing, al-Burhan received a farewell at Port Sudan International Airport from senior officials, including Malik Aqar Air, Deputy Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, Lt Gen Mohamed Alghali Ali Youssif, Secretary-General of the Sovereign Council, and several ministers.
Ali Al-Sadiq, the Foreign Minister, and Lt Gen Ahmed Ibrahim Mufaddal, the Director of the General Intelligence Service, are Accompanying al-Burhan on this visit.
On August 29, Al-Burhan visited Cairo for discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. During his visit, Al-Burhan emphasized the absence of connections between the military and the former Islamist regime.
