Jonglei detains two students for inciting hatred between tribes

June 29, 2008 (BOR TOWN) — Two students have been arrested on Saturday for exchanging hostile messages over internet thus “inciting violence among Jonglei State,” Governor Kuol Manyang told Christians congregation on Sunday.
The Governor said a public rally to be held on Monday to decide “what should be done to people who wanted to drive the communities into conflict.”
“These are the ones creating problems among us. They want tribe to go against tribe,” Manyang said with an anger tune arguing the youth to desist from causing wrangles.
The two students from John Garang Institute of Science and technology, whom Dean of Students (DOS) uphold their identity on request, are from Nuer and Dinka Bor in Jonglei State.
Nuer and Bor have been at peace since 1991’s SPLM split that sparked an attack on Great Bor Community – believed to have been sponsored by Sudan government and implemented by the then South Sudan Liberation Movement (SSLM). But since the reunion of the Sudan’s People Liberation Movement (SPLM) and South Sudan Liberation Movement (SSLM), peace, unity and trade have been flourishing between Bor and Nuer.
According to the DOS David Malual, the two students exchanged hostile messages at one of the Sudan Tribune’s news article commentary forum over a week ago and had done their part as an administration.
“After carrying investigation and found guilty, we suspended them for two weeks and returned – on conditioned that they write apology letters to Institute and Sudan Tribune,” he told Sudan Tribune today at the Institute.
But Head of National Security forces in Jonglei, who ordered the arrested of the students, have a different approach to the crisis. “The case is beyond Institute administration and will be solved by the government,” said Director of National Security forces Abraham Mayom.
UNIFYING STUDENTS
Meanwhile, Bor Town residents hail John Garang students of been very unifying factors in decades of wars and mistrust in Jonglei. On Saturday, the Institute team (photo) entertained Bor Town residents in a friendly match with Werkok secondary school under the theme: Unity, Togetherness and Cooperation.
Spectators welcomed the decision taken by Garang students to play with their fellow younger brothers where Werkok S S lost by 1-2 but some were very surprised when told the arrest. “I totally do not expect them to behave in such a way because, when you enter the University, you get them interacting freely regardless of tribes,” a town resident identified as Galuak told Sudan Tribune at the football pitch on Saturday.
However, the public see the issue as simply but only being exaggerated security unit. “Mistakes are human. You can’t expect one hundred people to have the same spirit. There is no need labeling them (students) ‘inciting violet.’ Who has ever won internet war,” said John Chol at the cathedral where the governor briefed the congregation about the students’ brutal behaviors.
Governor Kuol Manyang is due to address the students on Monday June 30 where he’s anticipated to deliver the verdict to the victims when found guilty.
The Southern Sudan ruling party — the SPLM — assured citizens of freedom of press and expression of one’s opinion. Governor Kuol Manyang – who is also the state chairman of the SPLM will show how much his party is democratic in this case on Monday, analysis say.

Whoever thought that Koul Manyang was going to do a good job as the governor, is clearly mistaken. We know, Manyang had failed miserably as a minister in Khartoum and is even going to do worse as a governor. Look how he is going around now, wasting time, excusing his failures by accusing the students for silly things like exchanging hostile Internet messages, whatever that means.
If there are any people inciting tribal violences, they are noted people with tribal tendencies like Manyang. The records are there. Let Manyang get out of the way and leave the students to study, freely without any threats of arrest, detention, or termination from schools. Schools suppose to be places that encourage exchange of free ideas and students suppose to live in atmosphere of free thoughts. The moment, some stupid government officials are stepping up to trample over free exchanging of ideas and denying students free thoughts, is the very moment that school is dead.

I warning people like Steve to think twice before posting any message, I know you are not far away from the South Sudan enemies who left the movement and Joined Khartoum for the seek of satisfying their only inclination. Everyone in Sudan in general known Lt. Gen. Kuol as a man behind every success of the CPA and the liberated area before CPA, Respect him as hero not a traitor like those who cause seriously damage and left scar that will never be reverse in any way.
Calling him fail is like abusing your only God because of his sacrifice and his greatness that no one among the collaborators to be compared with him accept those who stand behind the Movement like president Kiir and all the SPLA/SPLM CADRS and not Nasir group of Traitors.
Iam always against 1991 splits and those who where involved, who still enjoying the fruits of those who sacrifice their life not to abundant their people by collaborating with Khartoum and sign Khartoum Fools Agreement. That group of people still lives among us and still hold on to their dirty records not yet being terminated and their will be no exemption of the Traitor Dr. Riak and his group.
One of the people had told me last week that if the found father of the Movement Dr. Garang forgive him who are we? my answer to you today is that C IN C Garang did not forgive nor did he forget what this shameful Dr Riak Machar does to the South and that was why he said that I do not have personal problem with you but you got big problem with the People whom you betrayed and those who lost their life in your useless and shameful ambitious in which you never care about the people of the South identity. A shame on him. Am still bitter with Dr Riak collaborative activities and even God Jesus will never forgive him and I know there are many fools who when with him to Khartoum still rally behind this idle.
I got no common problem with Nuer community as long as the fool is left alone like is friend Dr. Lam than we will achieve what are after since he left the Movement. By Ngwerajak

I don’t think exchange of hostile and incitment letters between two people from different ethnic group can be termed as freedom of expression in the region like Southern Sudan, where the tribal tendency is till very strong in the life of the people. We should not decieve our selves with some of these western terminologies that need some time to be understood by all.I know how some reckless utresses sparked disasterous tribal fights and lost of live among communities in Southern Sudan. I think the governor of Jonglei state know the sensitivity of the matter that is why he stepped in forcely to avoid blood shed, because our people still view an individual member of the coummunity as a tribe.I am sorry for the comments of those who have gone far. Some of our writings shows that Southern Sudan need alot of political and social enlightments for some of us to understand how to live in peace and unity.

You know brothers our problem is not having different opinions, our problem is selection of words and attitude.We know even the identical twins can not be exactly thesame, but we should use constructive critisism. Some thing that can rebuke or challenge the readers to think about their actions. But not insults and words that can create more division and hatred among the Southern Sudanese. For example we know why the Southern Sudanes took up arms against the government in Khartoum, how can again a fellow Southern Sudanese tell his brother we are superior to you can you prove that you are not inferior? How can we begin to talk like this when it is still a long way for us to achieve our aspiration. I don’t Borthink student are doing any thing wrong, its like when you say the truth many people seem to be offended. The 1991 Bor genocide by Riek is not simple thing that people shouldn’t be talking about. Riek machar himself is now playing his own game that everybody do not not more about. people are still dyeing in Equatoria because of him and notthing is being done. What kind of democracy is it. Does PHD and big community depend justice. No body is above the law, this is criminality he is crime and he is still active doing wrongthing at backyard. he was the one who incited Mamur to do what he was about to do because he knows he is more educated than kiir and any other person now in GOSS. It was good thing for Dr Garnag to appointed paulino Matip as the head of Nuer because Nuer has no good leader who can lead them to the promised land. they do believe in Ngundeng and wurnyang but they were criminal who creat harted in southern sudan.
