September 7, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – More than 5 million people have been displaced inside and outside Sudan due to the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the UN humanitarian agency (OCHA) said.

The latest OCHA update show more than 1 million people have crossed into neighbouring Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

“Almost half of all acutely food insecure people across Sudan are in the states most affected by the conflict,” it reads in part.

The conflict in Sudan that erupted in April 15 between SAF and the paramilitary RSF has killed and injured thousands of people and displaced millions of others.

The war has also affected people within Sudan and in neighbouring countries.

According to the agency, its facilitated humanitarian convoys reached North Darfur and South Darfur for the first time since the conflict started in mid-April.

People have reportedly been displaced from eight states of Sudan and have taken refuge in 3,733 locations across the country’s 18 states, with the majority in River Nile, South Darfur, East Darfur, Northern, Sennar and North Darfur states.

About 69 per cent of IDPs are originally from Khartoum, OCHA figures show.

In addition, 1,004,261 people have crossed Sudan’s borders into neighbouring countries as of 6 September, including Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

As such, UNHCR said it has revised its requirements for the Sudan situation emergency response, appealing for US$506.5 million through December 2023.

Overall, 20.3 million people across Sudan are acutely food insecure and need food and livelihood assistance between July and September 2023, according to the latest integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) on the war-hit nation.
