Qatar voices support for political resolution in Sudan
September 7, 2023 (KHARTOUM) -Qatar declared its backing for a political solution to the Sudanese conflict following a one-day visit to Doha by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the Sovereignty Council, on Thursday.
Upon his arrival, al-Burhan engaged in an official discussion session with Emir Tamim ben Hamad Al Thani, focusing on the latest developments in Sudan. Al-Burhan expressed gratitude to the State of Qatar for its ongoing humanitarian assistance to Sudan since the crisis began.
In a post-meeting statement, the Amiri Palace announced, “During the meeting, the Emir reaffirmed the State of Qatar’s stance, calling for an end to the hostilities in Sudan and advocating for dialogue and peaceful means to resolve differences.”
The statement conveyed Doha’s hope for all Sudanese political entities to participate in extensive negotiations following the permanent cessation of military conflict, aiming to achieve a comprehensive and sustainable peace agreement.
The Emir also acknowledged the regional and international efforts and mediation initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and establishing stability in Sudan.
Al-Burhan is currently on a regional tour, having visited Egypt, South Sudan, and Qatar. Qatar is the first Gulf nation to visit since his departure from Khartoum at the end of August.
The head of the Sovereign Council stated that his visit to Qatar was to express gratitude to the Qatari leadership for their continuous support for the Sudanese people. He briefed the Qatari leadership on Sudan’s developments, in light of the rebellion by the Rapid Support Forces against the state.
“This rebellion will soon be quelled, and the Sudanese people will enjoy peace and stability,” he stated.
He also reiterated his commitment to completing the tasks of democratic transition and suppressing the rebellion in order to hand over power to a civilian government.
Last week, Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani received a delegation from the Forces for Freedom and Change. During the meeting, the coalition called on the Qatari government to support efforts to halt the conflict and resume negotiations, with the aim of restoring a civilian transitional government in Sudan.
