September 11, 2023 (ATBARA) –  The Criminal Investigations Department of the Nile River State in northern Sudan apprehended a field commander affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as announced by the Sudanese Ministry of Interior on Monday.

According to the Sudanese authorities, RSF members have been infiltrating neighbouring states of Khartoum to sow chaos and disrupt the mobilization of volunteers who intend to join the army in the Sudanese capital.

RSF Political Advisor Youssif Izzat had previously stated to Sudan Tribune that if the conflict persists, the paramilitary forces may make changes to their strategy to target the secure states from which volunteers enlist in the army. These states include the Northern State, Nile River, Al-Jazira, Kassala, Gedarif, and Port Sudan, among others.

“Following extensive security monitoring and close coordination with the Armed Forces Intelligence, the Police Investigations Department in the Nile River State successfully apprehended a field commander of the rebel militia,” according to a statement from the Interior Ministry.

The interior ministry disclosed that the arrest resulted from a well-executed security ambush in the Al-Muqrin neighbourhood of Atbara town. Furthermore, it was noted that the detained RSF commander and his son had been involved in looting banks and shops in the Khartoum North markets.

The statement added that the police are currently investigating the crimes committed by the detained RSF officer before transferring him to Military Intelligence.

Major General Salman Mohamed Al-Tayeb, the Director of the Nile River State Police, commended the joint efforts of the security agencies involved in the arrest.

“The River Nile State will remain an inhospitable place for those who defy the law and engage in criminal activities,” Al-Tayeb said.

The RSF elements loot civilians’ belongings and vehicles in Khartoum state. The leaders of the paramilitary group acknowledged their crimes and vowed to arrest the culprits. But the fleeing residents report the continued criminal acts.
