September 11, 2023 ( PORT SUDAN) – Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Army and Chairman of the Sovereign Council wrapped up his visit to Asmara on Monday, marking his fourth international travel since departing from army headquarters last August.

In Asmara, al-Burhan engaged in joint discussions with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations between Khartoum and Asmara and exploring avenues to bolster and develop these ties.

Ambassador Ali Al-Sadiq, the Sudanese Foreign Minister, shared in press statements upon the delegation’s return that the visit underscored Eritrea’s support for Sudan and its territorial integrity.

Al-Sadiq highlighted the positions expressed by President Afwerki during the summit of Sudan’s neighbouring countries and the IGAD summit in Djibouti, which aimed at advancing peace and stability in Sudan.

He said that al-Burhan also briefed Afwerki on the situation in Sudan, particularly “the rebellion of the Rapid Support Militia against the state and the resulting crimes and violations against Sudanese citizens”.

Furthermore, the discussions encompassed proposed initiatives to address the Sudanese crisis and the quest for a unified vision to achieve peace and stability in the country.

The Information Ministry in Asmara reported that President Afwerki reaffirmed Eritrea’s stance on the Transition to Safety, a position that had been presented before the outbreak of the conflict.

“He emphasized the challenges and complexities that arise from the proliferation of various initiatives. President Afwerki also stressed the importance of effective coordination and harmonization of these efforts,” added a statement issued at the end of the visit.

His visit to Asmara coincided with the presence of several leaders from the Democratic Bloc, some of whom bid farewell to the head of the Sovereign Council alongside President Afwerki after the conclusion of their joint discussions.

Al-Burhan initiated his foreign tours in Egypt and subsequently visited South Sudan and Qatar. His upcoming itinerary is expected to encompass visits to Chad, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
