Sudan preliminary census results released – report

July 8, 2008 (KHARTOUM) – The preliminary results of Sudan census that started in April has been released, according to press reports.

In this photo released by the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), First Vice President of the Republic of Sudan and President of the Government of Southern Sudan Salva Kiir, left, sits after holding a press conference at his home after midnight to mark the launch of a census in Sudan, in Juba, southern Sudan, Tuesday, April 22, 2008 (AP)

The daily Al-Hayat newspaper published in London said that the results show that the population of Sudan is approximately 38 million people.

The state of Khartoum is the most populated with 6.5 million residents while Al-Jazeera state came second with 4.2 million.

The report also said that the population of the 10 Southern states added up to 3.8 million or 10% of the population.

However the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) quoted the central bureau of statistics as denying these figures saying no numbers has been released yet.

“These numbers appear to be from the Fifth census” the statement said.

The central bureau of statistics expects final census results as early as September, but other officials have quoted year end as a more realistic date.

The Egyptian-occupied Halayib triangle in the North East and remote areas in the south flooded by rains were excluded from the census.

All Darfur rebel groups rejected the census, including the signatories to the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) saying poor security makes it impossible to conduct it fairly.

Sudan’s south initially withdrew from the census a few days before it started saying they wanted millions of southerners to return home first and questions on ethnicity and religion to be reinserted in the questionnaire.

However the Government of South Sudan (GoSS) reversed its decision but cautioned it may not sign off on the results, without elaborating.

The census is the first one to be held in Sudan since 1993 and is a prerequisite for the 2009 elections.

The results will be used to determine the distribution of power and wealth, including booming oil proceeds.

The Sudan’s People Liberation Movement (SPLM), signed a peace deal in January 2005 with the government of the National Congress Party (NCP) in January 2005 ending two decades of civil war in Southern Sudan. The peace deal made the SPLM, the ruling party in the south and the NCP the ruling party in the north.

In 2011, southerners will be asked to vote in a referendum on whether they want to be independent or remain part of Sudan

South Sudan is only about 10% of the population? What a shame! Dinkas are over 2 million alone excluding other tribes. Useless census. My assumption is that South Sudan population should have been close to 10 million people.

If the population of Murle can reach 2 millions, then what a fake result for Southern Sudan by the Sudan government for South to be twice the population of Khartoum? What a hapless, greedy, bad eyes and corrupt basher!! You will end up estimating the population of southern Sudan down but you will end up failing to get the heritage of southern Sudan.

This article of preliminary outcomes of Sudan sensus is not true. The ten Southern States cannot have population of 3.8 millions. That is a serious manipulation of figures designed by NCP in trying to control the Sudan political spectrum. Consequently, the more the NCP grabs power and natural resources from the South through its inflated figures and cheatings the more the South Sudan will break away. Even half a million population can make a country; it does not matter how more or less you are to be recognized by the world community as country. Cheating has short legs and it can break people apart even within one family when realized.

Oh! this is a laughing matter to me and to Southern Sudan at large b’coz the population of each region Equatoria, Upper Nile or Bhar El Ghazal in Southern Sudan can’t even be 3.8 million. How come that the state of Khartoum’s population surpass that of Southern Sudan. What about Juba? If truth be told, there is no much difference between the population of Juba and that of Khartoum.

“A BLURRED EYE OF JUSTICE IS NO EYE OF TRANQUILTY!”

    Compatriots,

Allow me to jostle the precepts of the Greatest Orator of Peace the one who fought all his life to bring justice to the Negroes of America. I’m not worth his words but history has always remained to be told especially in matters of Liberty, Freedom and Justice more over Martin Luther King Jr. was a man who had Peace, Love and Unity wrought on his shoulder lest he would have not triumphed and changed the political course of the present day America.

In his speech, “I HAVE A DREAM”, KING said:

It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negro’s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.

The preliminary results for the ten Southern States are sample of the results due and if you had been keen on brother-against-brother rule of Arabs in the largest African nation, you would have easily known the meaning of these results. As one who served under Southern Sudan Centre for Census, Statistics and Evaluation (SSCCSE) in the mapping exercise, I have ample reason to dispute the reliability of these results and as I do know Southern Sudan preliminary results were just assumed as has always been the case.

3.8 million for Southern ten states! May I advise our Southern politicians to declare a non-outrageous Independence of the South and to work for the common good of our black peasants, the Haves and the Have-nots, the elderly and the young; the past, the present and the Future generations.

Our late Hero didnot leave any stone unturned and that was why he said: If you want to be a second class citizen in your own native country, the choice is yours. Can we rise to the peak of Immatong mountains and say damn the preliminary results or can we say Insha Allah they will change their ideologies? But remember the Rights of the fore mothers and Fathers who died for the sake of Liberty, Freedom; Self determination and the enjoyment of all rights, the components of yesterday’s, today’s and tomorrow’s justice.

Long live the great people of Southern Sudan!

Long live the Vision of our fallen Heroines and Heroes!

Damn the brother-against-brother rule of Enemies of Peace, Unity,Liberty;Freedom and Tranquility!

    Honour!!

What a message of Doom that has ever been released in this website Dear Southerners!

It is not a matter of shouting but what can we do if it really happened and trully speaking, this must be the case. I wonder if our leaders are so reactive like we are otherwise things will fall apart on our side either. I propose that the census results must be dishonoured since they did that assumption not even a fraction of reality. Who will believe, Southern Sudan or International community?

Finally, another alternative is that our vision of self-determination must not miss our hears.

This result was mean only to encourage northerners so they believe the can take the country if they are the majority.

They are insulting southerners and many northerners will perish with their believe.

Are they counting people who came from Iraq, Egypt, Iran to fillup Khartoum, plus Chinese, so sure there can be 6million people in Khartoum but there are also millions southerners in Khartoum alone, but they seem to forget that because in their mine black Sudanese and southerners doesn’t click in their brains as humans.

These are the simple example we should know they don’t like or want us but we are watching and learning day by day.

Okay so Southerners are a million people, still we are SEPARATING! We will reproduce.

Leave Khartoum alone so 2011, southerners vote a referendum.

Stop referring to southern Sudan’army as SPLA. Don’t say SPLA wee!!! South Sudan wee!! That doesn make sense in my opinion.

SPLA wee!! and New Sudan wee!! go together when talking about Sudan politic.

Southern Sudanese must stop saying these ‘things’ when talking about the politics of southern Sudan

    By: Lago Gatjal Riaka

    Introduction:

Since the end of Anyanye 1, southern Sudan politics and its future has been a very confusing one. The Anyanye 1 guys were very clear on their objective; a struggle for an independent southern Sudan. They believe that southern Sudanese were very different from their partners in the north. They believe that southern Sudanese were very different from their partners in the north in the way they think about what Sudan as a country should look like. When southern Sudanese think that Sudan should recognize diversity, Arabs and Muslims on the other hand do not understand that fact. Arabs and Muslims think that when southern Sudanese talk about diversity of Sudan as country, it is an attack on their religion and Islamic ideals.

When southern Sudanese talk about the diversity of Sudan, they mean Sudan that is made up of different cultures, religions, ethnic groups, and non-believers. This is what southern Sudanese have always wanted to be acknowledged in Sudan politics by treating everybody in Sudan equal under the supreme law of the land which is the constitution. But, the constitution of Sudan has been written in a way that it leans toward Islamism and Arabism. This analogy makes Muslims and Arabs in Sudan think that Sudan must be an Islamic state or made into it by making sure that all people of Sudan comply to Islamic laws for instance, Sharia’s law. If the problem of Sudan is defined, it must be defined in this content of confusion on what Sudan should look like both from southern Sudanese, Muslims, Christians, non-believers, and Arab’s perspectives. For problem of Sudan to be solved, all diverse people of Sudan need to sit together at the table and discuss what their country should look like politically, economically, and socially.

Particularly, the people of southern Sudan have been the ones that have been confused by the mess politics of Sudan in a way that they the ‘people of southern Sudan’ do not even know their political objective and struggle. If you talk to southern Sudanese whether in Sudan or abroad about reasons why they went to war with the government in Khartoum, they would not tell you the same thing. Some would tell you that southern Sudanese went to war with the government in Khartoum because of oil. Some would tell you that they were just dragged into war without reasons. Some would tell you that they do not understand why they went to war. Southerners would tell you more and more answer about the war. Because some southern Sudanese do not understand why they went to war with the government in Khartoum in the first place, also their political objective in their struggle becomes a confuse one. For instance, going back to the oil thing where some southern Sudanese suggest that the southern Sudanese have been fighting the government because of oil, it is clear that the central core of reasons why southerners went to war in the first place are left out.

For some southerners to suggest that they went to war because of oil in the first place would not make much sense to me and to many others in southern Sudan who are intellectually informed now about the war. The reason is that when the first mutiny broke out in 1955 in the town of Torit in Eastern Equotoria, oil in Sudan wasn’t discovered yet in the region until 1978. Therefore, there must be other core central reasons why we went to war in the beginning. Most of these reasons why southerners went to war in the beginning have been addressed by many writers on these websites and most people out there must now be informed of these reasons. The reasons why southerners mutinied in the beginning before the SPLM/A were fight against discrimination, exclusion from participatory politics of Sudan, unequal distribution of resources, and social injustices practices against southerners or Christians south.

I would argue that to understand the central core reasons why southerners went to war in the first place with the government in Khartoum, one needs to have some educational background. Even those southerners who are educated are still confused to some degree because our leaders have been confusing the public of southern Sudan in the struggle. Because of this confusion among southerners, the future of southern Sudan remains in darkness since the people of southern Sudan are confused themselves. For southern Sudanese to see a straight future of southern Sudan and its politics, they must stopped holding to and talking about some of the confusing factors in Sudan’s politics.

    Confusing factors among southern Sudanese
? Southern Sudanese must stop saying that Sudan is our country and the land of black people

? They must stop saying that there are no Arabs in Sudan

? They must stop saying ‘New Sudan wayee’ in their public gatherings

? They must stop referring to southern Sudan army as ‘SPLA’

? When talking to outsiders, southern Sudanese must stop saying that religion was not part of the problem why southerners fought the government in Khartoum in the first place

? Southern Sudanese must stop looking toward Khartoum for the development of southern Sudan

? They must stop seeing SPLM/A as a political movement that will lead them to an independent South Sudan

? They must stop mixing southern Sudanese interest with the interest of some people in the north

? Southern Sudanese must stop saying that Darfurians and Nubians are our brothers, therefore, we can not leave them with the Arabs in the north in case southern Sudan become independent (feel of sympathy toward Darfurians and Nubians)

? Southern Sudanese must stop saying that ‘Dr. John Garang said that.’ We must deal with new era and new ideas about our future right now. Dr.John Garang’s era must be let go and we must turn the page.

? 90 percent of our politicians in the government of southern Sudan have unionist mind. These politicians are the biggest threat to southern Sudanese intellectuals who want to come back to southern Sudan to help in the development of southern Sudan.

? Southern Sudanese should not look to the Arab world for the development of southern Sudan

? Last but not the least, southern Sudanese must stop saying that the problem in Sudan is only Omar Bashir and his counter-partners. I hold all Muslims and Arabs in Sudan responsible for Sudan’s conflict.

    i. What the heck is ‘Sudan is our country?’

Southern Sudanese must stop saying that ‘Sudan is our country.’ That Sudan is our land and belonged to black people in the first place before Arabs came to Sudan. Southern Sudanese have this mind-set that has been holding them back for a long time. If they do not let this mind-set go it will continue to mislead them in Sudan’s politics. Because of this mind-set of thinking that Sudan is a land of black people, it is a problematic for southerners to define their political objective, a problem that occurred when Sudan People Liberation Movement political wing or Sudan People Liberation Army military wing was form in 1983. Therefore, this mind-set among southerners has made them think that they must conquer the whole Sudan and rule it someday and that day will come at the end where black people will rule Sudan. Even in the present days in southern Sudan, people are still hold to the idea of Sudan is our country and our land that someday black president will be in the power and then we will change Sudan and become ‘New Sudan.’
In response to this mind set among southerners holding to the idea that Sudan is a land of black people and therefore, a day will come where black will rule Sudan, this mind-set must be let go. Southerners must understand that the Arabs, who came to Sudan no matter when, are now Sudanese and have settled in the land for centuries. Therefore, they are also in entitled to the land which is the north side of the country. Northern Sudan has been occupied by these Arabs for centuries before the establishment of statehood or government. They came to the land that is now known as Sudan in the ancient times. They came as traders and settled. For centuries before colonization in which all nations in the present day Sudan were put together to live under a country that later became Sudan, Arabs have been in the region longer than we can date back. The Arabs in the north have the right to claim the north as their ancestral land and therefore, no one would object to that argument which means they can even fight for their independent if they want to.

Therefore, for southern Sudanese or black people in Sudan to claim that Sudan is our country or the land of the black race excluding the Arabs decent would also qualified as a myth and unrealistic. This factor is one of the factors that have confused southern Sudanese within the SPLM/A leadership to fight in liberating the whole Sudan. Although the idea was a liberation of whole Sudan, mostly Dr.John Garang when talking to southern Sudanese have always tried to convinced southern Sudanese that the land Sudan belong to us; the black race. Therefore, we can not let it go and be control by the Arab north. We must conquer the Arabs north and chase them away from our land. There are songs by SPLA battalions and young Red Army featuring these ideas of thinking that we must liberate the land.

Thus, to suggest that SPLM/A was in fight of liberating marginalized areas in Sudan from injustices would not make much sense to me without attaching the feeling that Sudan is a land of black people and therefore, the land must be liberated from Arabs, the strangers. Although it is a fact that Arabs decent came to Sudan from the Middle East and settled in Sudan, southern Sudanese and black people in Sudan must understand that now these Arabs are also inhabitants of Sudan. Every community in Sudan has the right to claim self-determination within their own bordering community without claiming part of Sudan where they do not reside. For instance, it does not make much sense for southern Sudanese to claim that Sudan is our country, therefore, independent of southern Sudan would mean a failure of letting our land go in the north to the Arabs. Some southern Sudanese in their conversations say that how can we be independent and leave our land in northern Sudan to be taken by the Arabs.

The land that southern Sudanese refer to is whole land of Sudan from southern Sudan, Northern Sudan, Eastern Sudan, and Western Sudan. Southern Sudanese and black people in Sudan call all these regions our land. This rhetoric mind-set has misled the people of southern Sudan in the second civil war during the SPLM/A era and if not taken into consideration will continue to mislead them in their future by missing the big picture of what their objective should be as Christians, southern Sudanese, and black people. Southern Sudanese must stop looking at the land in the north, east, and west as their land because of some historic writings that the present generation in southern Sudan would not recall. Southern Sudanese must not hold their future of an independent southern Sudan because of some historic writing that indicate the land in the north and other parts of Sudan as belonging to us. It belonged to us in the beginning; our ancestors used to live there but since then it has not been belonging to us. The land that we would claim as belonging to us would be the land that we now occupy in southern Sudan. That land in southern Sudan belongs to us and it is the land that we should have been fighting for in the beginning as our Anyanya 1 guys fought for.

All marginalized areas in Sudan can fight for self-determination within their own regions by forcing the government in Khartoum to accept power sharing, guarantee equal distribution of resources, equal justice under the law, and abolishment of discrimination deeds in the politics of Sudan. If these actions are not taken seriously by the government in Khartoum, other options can be taken for instance a fight for an independent state. That is why southern Sudanese have been fighting for a change in Sudan’s system for over fifty years and their voice was never heard. The only alternative for southern Sudanese is to break away from the union. Therefore, their future can not be hold by some historic writings that claim Sudan is a land of black people. Although Sudan was a land of black people, it is not a land of black people anymore. It is a land of black people and Arabs decent who have come to the present land that became Sudan. These people have the right to claim the north part of the country as their land and southern Sudanese should not claim that land in the north if they got what they want which is an independent south Sudan. Also, southern Sudanese must not be fool by history that letting northern Sudan go would mean a failure in our side. This is nonsense. Southern Sudanese should not hold to the idea of ‘New Sudan’ thinking that someday black people will rule Sudan.

I often went through Khartoum area and its huge suburbs, since Soba until Gabarona and Karia, since Kalakla until Bahri and Karo (universities); I often saw also by plane. I am sure that there is more than 5 millions inhabitants and that Khartoum is now one of the biggest capitals of Africa, and even the “Third World”.
But I know also that there is in the North at least 4 million Southerners, as there is so a lot in the nearby countries as Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, etc. and in the States, in Canada, in Australia.
I think they must return in the South.

I would to make another remark: The number of inhabitans in South Sudan has no importance for the result of the self determination in 2011, because it is about the proportion and not the number of vote. And there is no doubt that the result will be INDEPENDENCE. And I am sure that the population will increase after independence.

Brilliant and wonderful idea to have that soliderity summit between Africa continent’s leaders and counterpart South-America’s continent leaders, but would the both continents combine and condemn the booldy evildeor Sudanese president Omer Al-Bashir for his evil crimes done against his people in Sudan? I would be very happy too to hear that Omer Al-Bashir has been questioned and asked about his crimes committed against humanity in Sudan from that summit in September.
