Sudan Health ministry, UNDP partner to fight Malaria, HIV/Aids

October 1, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – The Health ministry in Sudan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have announced a new partnership aimed at strengthening the heath sector in the war-torn nation.

As part of efforts to enhance this initiative, the Federal Health minister Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim on Sunday met the Deputy UNDP Resident Representative Thair Shraideh and discussed UNDP activities in the sector in light of the challenges in provision of life-saving medicines, medical equipment and medical operations.

Ibrahim lauded UNDP’s support to the health sector, calling for more cooperation.

For his part, the Deputy UNDP Resident Representative congratulates the ministry for accepting the grant for malaria, tuberculosis and Aids for the next three years

He said within this framework, UNDP is committed to supporting the Federal Health ministry to overcome these challenges by continuing to support the activities of tuberculosis, Aids and malaria programs, strengthening the health system and basic health care and continuing with projects initiated before the current conflict.

Shraideh also reviewed the achievements of the programme and activities during the previous period, saying a joint cooperation is vital in overcoming challenges.

He thanked the ministry for its efforts to carry out the great work of providing services in previous years despite of the difficult circumstances in the country.

More than five of months conflict between the army (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces has compounded the healthcare crisis. Most hospitals have reportedly become non-operational due to occupation by the Rapid Support Forces, and widespread looting and vandalism have impacted pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies.
