Coalition of civilian groups condemn bombing of hospital in Sudan
October 11, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – A broad coalition of civil groups has condemned the bombing of Al-Nao Hospital in Omdurman, which killed four people and injured many others, rendering the hospital unusable.
In statements to Sudan Tribune on Monday, the hospital’s medical staff accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of shelling the MSF-supported facility, which is located in an area controlled by the Sudanese army.
The Declaration of Principles Coalition to Stop the War and Restore Democracy in Sudan on Wednesday condemned the bombing of the Nao Hospital, stressing that the ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the RSF has collapsed the health system and spread epidemics of cholera, dengue fever, and malaria in the war-affected states and areas housing internally displaced persons (IDPs).
“The war has also caused the death of countless numbers of people with chronic conditions such as kidney disease, cancer, and heart and arterial diseases,” added the anti-war coalition.
Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) said on Monday that two people were killed inside the emergency department and two others outside the hospital.
A medical worker at the hospital, who spoke to Sudan Tribune on condition of anonymity, said that the continued targeting of Al-Nao Hospital in recent days had led to the evacuation of a large number of patients and the departure of doctors for their safety.
MSF said the bombed facility was one of the few remaining operational hospitals in Omdurman.
