October 13, 2023 (KHARTOUM) – Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh and his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukri convened to discuss the ongoing initiatives to resolve the conflict in Sudan, both sides stated.

The meeting, attended by Eritrean Presidential Adviser Yemane Gebreab, is part of the continuous efforts to bring the conflicting parties in Sudan to the negotiation table and end the crisis, which has resulted in widespread suffering and displacement.

The Eritrean Information Ministry, in an announcement on its official website, stated that the two sides deliberated on methods to consolidate various initiatives to promote a peaceful resolution.

In a separate statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry underscored that the discussions included an assessment of the current situation in Sudan and its implications for the nation’s future stability and the broader regional context.

Both parties emphasized the central role of neighbouring Sudan countries in finding sustainable solutions. The focus is on ensuring Sudan’s unity, safety, and stability.

Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the Sovereign Council in Sudan, has expressed his support for the neighbouring countries’ initiative. He visited Cairo, Juba, and Asmara as part of this diplomatic outreach.

Notably, al-Burhan did not travel to N’dajemna, which has faced allegations of serving as a transit point for UAE support to the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Additionally, the Sudanese military leader has reservations about Addis Ababa’s role due to its support for the Kenyan chairmanship of the IGAD mediation group.
