UN chief denies promising Sudan president to press ICC prosecutor

July 11, 2008 (UNITED NATIONS) – The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon quickly moved to deny reports that he promised the Sudanese president Omar Hassan Al-Bashir to work on suspending imminent indictment by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against him.

Sudan official news agency (SUNA) quoted Ban as telling Al-Bashir that he “regrets the move of the International Criminal Court to arrest a number of senior state officials”.

SUNA also quoted the Sudan’s U.N. ambassador Abdel-Mahmood Mohamed as saying that Ban Ki Moon has promised to work on blocking the ICC indictments through his meetings with the P-5 members of the UN Security Council (UNSC).

But Ban’s office issued a statement on Sunday saying that he stressed to Al-Bashir during their conversation that he “does not have any influence on the ICC prosecutor”.

However Ban Ki-Moon said in an interview published Monday he was “very worried” by the possibility of Sudan’s president being indicted for crimes committed in the country’s Darfur region.

“It would have very serious consequences for peacekeeping operations including the political process,” he told Le Figaro newspaper. “I’m very worried but nobody can evade justice.”

Ban underlined that no political process could be effective without the rule of law.

He also indicated to Al-Bashir that he was concerned by a declaration made by Sudan’s UN envoy which linked the initiative of the ICC Prosecutor with the two UN peacekeeping operations deployed to Sudan.

Sudan’s UN ambassador told reporters that “all options are on the table” if Sudan president is indeed indicted.

“The limit is the sky” he responded to a question at the UN headquarters about measures Khartoum could take.

Ban also deplored “the scale and brutality of the deadly 8 July attack” and urged the Sudanese president to “investigate the circumstances of the attack, which left seven peacekeepers dead and 19 wounded”.

The outgoing UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Marie Guehenno told a closed UNSC session this week that evidence show that Darfur rebels are not behind the attack on the peacekeepers.

This week the UN Secretary General yesterday had refused to comment on the speculations of Al-Bashir’s indictments saying that “as a Secretary General I am not in a position to mention anything officially before the announcement by the ICC”.

“In principal I believe that peace and justice should go hand in hand. Justice can be part of a peace process but peace without justice cannot be sustainable” he added.

However Ban Ki-Moon said he will assess the situation after the suspects are named next week.

On Friday, the Washington Post reported that ICC prosecutors will seek the arrest of Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir for genocide in Darfur, prompting Khartoum to warn of a threat to peace efforts.

UN Staff in Darfur were informed of the new security arrangements, which restrict the movement of civilian personnel. Any threat against the international personnel would require total evacuation.

This is the first time since 2004, date of the entrance of the UN humanitarian staff to Darfur, the international organization takes such decision.

The Sudanese Victim of crime agains humanity in Darfur and in Sudan, can accept the denies of Mr Ban Ki-Moon for the promissing Sudanese government to stop ICC decision.
The opinion of Ban Ki-Moon is wisdom, but he also can use his capacity to let Sudanese authority not to tuch any peace keeper in Darfur as awarrning to the terror, nor the UN and international community will take second step to use force again the regime, rather than the arrest.

Those who said that no UN violation or ICC that can let the ICC arrest president within one of BBC correspondent in Khartuom, let them know that the president of Surbbia and Laibaria and Banama, Daniel Ortaka they have been arrested and charged.
The government now in Khartoum is using threaten Embassies and UN and foreign of violence reaction from unknown gruope and also termination of the peace agreements, that can not stop ICC to go forwards, and when ever the terror gone, the justice will be follow them.
Mr Ban Ki-Moon is a secretary of Unite Nation, the man of peace maker not a lawer for terrorize.

All the people around the world keep on encouraging the ICC to go ahead with issueing the arrest warrent for Al Beshir. How ever no one has stopped to think for one second what would really happen in the case of a warrent. Man slaughter would start all over Sudan targeting all civilians no matter who they are fueled by anger and rage with in the Beshir inhuman mind. Stop and think, whats in darfur cannot be said as a genocide compared to what going to happen there is this warrent is issued. The true ethnic cleansing will start with its ugliest face possible. THINK OF THE CONSEQUENCES, its possible that war will start again in the south of sudan only this time more aggressive and violent than before. Think how many people in Khartoum and the North of Sudan will be arrested prosecuted and executed just to protect Al Beshir from this warrent. YOU THINK AND TELL ME WHAT YOU SEE, for i see another world catastrophe if this warrent is issued. THINK PLEASE.

If UN General secretary and the International community are not going to take action on Darfur crisis, that mean Sudan will out of population for the rampant killing of innocent people.
Indeed if Sudan president will not be taken to Court what will be the work of UN General secretary for Sudan while he is indited other presidents to ICC.
For that I would like to request International community to retributed Omar AlBisir for the restitution of innocent people.

    Dear Ban Ki-Moon,

we know very well that your Omer El-bashir’s supporter since your allowed Khartoum government to killed the civilian in Darfur and you never take properly action.

Dear Ban, let me ask you what is the different between Sadam and Omer Bashir? Bashir is like Sadam in Iraq that killed thousand of People in Iraq. How can you regret for the decision taken by ICC to take Sudanese president to the court, who committed criminal acts against humanity in Darfur and south Sudan? Bashir must taken to the court due to his criminal acts in the country.

We the Sudanese people need Bashir to face charges.

Please Ban Ki-moon do not protect Bashir . Sudan will be free without Omer el-Bashir.

ICC go ahead to take Bashir to the court despite the influence made by Ban.
Ban Ki-moon is getting a money from Bashir that is why is reluctant.

    thanks.

    TAKE TIME AND REASON!

AS FOR BASHIR, LET HIM PROVE HIS WORTH BEFORE THE ICC AND IF HE IS GUILTY THEN WE SHALL SAY IN-SHA ALLAH THE CRIMINAL IS GONE; IF INNOCENT THEN WE SHALL LET HIM ROT ON THE POLITICAL BENCH AND GIVE WAY TO MORE CONCERNED CITIZEN TO RULE OUR GREAT NATION.

HA HA HAAAAAAAAAAAAAI, THE SALVA’S SHOULD BE WINKING AN INDEFINITE EYE TO THE HIGH SEAT AND THE UNCLE’S SHOULD BE READY TO SERVE AS……………

TRY YOUR LUCK YA WED AL SHENDI,
