October 17, 2023 (JUBA) – South Sudan said Monday it will next week hold a meeting to review the Juba peace agreement which Sudan had signed with a coalition of armed and non-armed groups operating under the banner of Sudan Revolutionary Front in 2020.

The October 2020 Agreement for Peace, which was signed by Sudan’s transitional government and by many of the country’s main warring factions, is highly complex and covers a wide range of areas, including governance, security and transitional justice.

The agreement is intended to inform the future constitutional negotiation process.

However, the implementation of the agreement has been affected by military interventions and subsequent violent conflict, halting all political processes and dialogue until a ceasefire is reached by the parties currently engaged in the armed confrontation.

In an effort aimed at reminding the parties and the region of the legal basis of the Juba peace agreement, the deputy chairman of the Sovereign Council of Sudan, Malik Agar visited South Sudan on Monday and held discussions with President Salva Kiir.

Kiir reiterated readiness to host Sudan’s political leaders in Juba next week.

Agar also used the opportunity to provide a briefing on the current developments in Sudan and solicit the support of the South Sudanese leader and his administration.

South Sudan’s presidential advisor on national security affairs, Tut Gatluak Manime told reporters in the capital, Juba that the Sudanese leaders seek to review the Juba Peace Agreement while forging a common understanding of resolving the conflict.

Sudan’s ambassador to Juba, Jamal Malik thanked President Kiir for his continuous search for peace and stability in Sudan. South Sudan reiterated its commitment to peaceful settlement of the conflict in Sudan and appealed to the military and political leaders in Sudan to end the ongoing conflict through peaceful dialogue.
