Sudan receives new shipment of Russian fighter jets

July 20, 2008 (WASHINGTON) — A shipment of new Russian MIG-29 tactical fighters has recently arrived into Sudan from Belarus, a source familiar with the matter told Sudan Tribune today.
However he could not confirm whether the fighters were actually sold by Belarus or they simply came through the East European country.
The planes are now in the Wadi Sayedna air base, the source added.
Belarus is one of the Sudan armament providers. A military cooperation protocol covering training, exchange of experiences, and military science fields was inked between the two countries in June 2006.
If the MIG-29’s are used in Darfur it would be in violation of UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution 1591 which prohibits selling arms to Sudan government or Darfur rebels for use in the war ravaged region.
Last year Russia was accused by Amnesty International (AI) supplying arms to Sudan for use in Darfur but the Russian foreign ministry denied the charge.
Last May a MIG-29 was shot down by Darfur rebels over the Sudanese twin capital city of Omdurman and its Russian pilot was killed.

It is with no surprise that Sudan government under Bashir’s leadership is equipping herself with military warhead as a result of political turmoil in the whole region. As most of us know the trends and tendency of Bashir’s regime since the signing of the comprehensive peace agreement, there is no doubt that jets fighter like the one displayed could be seen in such a view.
Before the comprehensive peace agreement, it was in the interest of Bashir to equip his government with military warhead so that any kind of attempted coup would be prevented from happening. Bashir has purchased the weapons of different kinds and military jets fighter from his allies. It was a set of mechanism to keep him in power, and to systematically whip the marginalized people before knowing anything with regard to his dictatorship.
Because of international community, more focuses were held which resulted in inserting the pressure on Sudanese government. Despite pressure from the outside, military equipments did not stop from coming in to Sudan.
There came the comprehensive peace agreement which normalized the condition in some regions with exclusion of Darfur region which still is facing the hardship and human suffering in the hand of Sudanese government. However, the golden bowl of peace has been experiencing some difficulties which closely examined the degree to which it was signed for. The reason is very simple, it was presumably underestimated by the Bashir’s regime and the Arab Sudanese in general that this peace would simply means deceiving the world community and their ally the southern Sudanese who were granted autonomous government for six years period before referendum day in 2011.
As soon as Bashir administration closely observed the magnitude of peace process and the development achieved by their counter part the southern Sudanese, a regret to withhold some of the main protocols have become the main focuses. Again, international pressure is still playing a huge role indefinitely to bring to conclusion and full resolution to what we know as crime against humanity. But, Bashir’s regime failed to comply with international community to stop buying military equipments from his supporters such as China and Russia.
Frankly speaking, if the world community is still silent and never put into action banning military warhead from going into Sudan, that means the consequence would be to all not to other opponents discredited Bashir’s regime such as Darfurians, and the southern Sudanese . What I mean by that is UN peace keeping force on the ground will face the hardship as well because they are part of the targeted group. It is not the southern Sudan a lone or Darfur region, but Sudanese government will target every foreigner in the whole country. It was a bit fine when Bashir has not heard the indictment.
However, after hearing the indictment, Bashir has fully understood and realized that there is no alternative for him to escape these accusations. He would be ready to try anything as a sign of defensive mechanism if the ICC doesn’t take action soon enough from doing any harm against people of different background. If Bashir’s intension comes to possible, it is the ICC to blame because there is no arm embargo held by the international community to Sudan. I would strongly urge the world community, and the ICC to quickly act than to wait to prevent any worse crisis from happening. I would also urge the southern Sudanese to be very careful and to look forward to accepting the ICC accusation against Bashir because it is him a lone who committed this crime against humanity. Rather than working very hard to fine ways to possibly drop charges, it is better if Sudanese could hand Bashir or Bashir to report himself to ICC without buying more arm to equip his military.

The Russian fighter jet, MIG-29 that Sudanese government received recently will remain in Wadi Saidna not in Juba, Wau, or Malakal of South Sudan. Therefore, the Government of South Sudan needs to provide budget and make strong deals and good relationships with the top first world nations to buy and equip its new military airforce.

It is not easy for the head of state to be arrested like a normal criminal or someone who doesn’t have power. That is not a wise decision for the persons who supported the arrestment of President Bashir while he stills in power whereby he can killed more people than those already perished under his administration. You also know what, offering an arrest warrant for President Bashir would make Sudan a fail state if it may happen; as a result, many coups to grab the power from him will appear, especially from the Northerners. Peace in the South will be dishonored if a new leader who did not signed the CPA assumed the Presidency. I think the Southerners should work together with Bashir to protect his administration and to protect the CPA. It seems that many Northerners do not like Bashir to have a credit for making the CPA a success even if such a peace has been signed in the past and was dishonored by the President who signed it. I and most of Sudanese people would like the CPA to succeed and to make the peace in Darfur conclusive and through negotiation as it has been done in the CPA. The only way to put Bashir in pressure is to put more economic sanctions including a sever arms embargo.

Did you read this news.it is a bad news anyway.How can Sudan bought new fighter aircraft yet talk of peace.my dear Southerners and Darfurian.We must be careful.these arms will be used on us.Let stop embezzling of Public funds especially the Army salaries because they will protect us in the event of war .Otherwise we will go back to the same bush we came from last three years.

Good morning and welcome to the forum. Russia, China and Basheir must know that these weapons that they makes and exports to Sudan are not superior then the Almighty God of the margenalized people of the Sudan. They shall keep on manifucturing weapons, exporting weapons, and buying weapons but God knows how to deal with these blood thirst!.
It is high time for the world to see what the interest of these two gaint nations is in Sudan. Our oil is our oil,God gave us and your desert is your desert God gave you. Why disturbed us always. God is going to do wonders on you should you and Basheir failed to change your interest of killing African to take their land and oil.

Dear Mr Martin,your point of view is actually reality it’s unfair for president of state to be charged for war crime against humanity.However,in this point we are not going to support the terrorist Man even if it’s our last of life.How can a president kill his own citizen like checken,For this reason no body will stand with Bashir unless those Arabic countries by the away Sudan is not an arabic country but it’s African country and Bashir will escope ICC charge’s unless he hand over the two suspect Men of him to ICC.Bashir is ruling Sudan by mistake becouse sudan does not belong’s to Asina ,and this rubbish Russian air craft fight of him will end up like what Khalid did in May 10 in khartoum,omnduruman.No worry Brother Martin soon you will enjoy the pleasure of Bashir going to hell.

I think the SPLA/SPLM are listening to what the NCP whom they call partner is doing,why don’t they convince mr Bashir before convincing the ICC, because there is no need for a country who believe to be entering in peace talks with the rebels to buy a sopisticatd weapon like this,so southernr watch
out and let the ICC deal with them.i am warning the SPLA/SPLM to be carefully because the kind of weaponery the NCP is immporting in are dangerous not only to Darfur as they put it but also to the people of south Sudan.

IT IS A WASTE OF RESOURCES AND TIME!
How many MIG-29 tactical fighters, jet fighters; sophisticated weapons and more did Saddam have yet he was forced to live against his will. So, Bashir, I believe, will be taken to the Hague in a moment of time to defend his course and actions meanwhile Russia alongside China will be topical search in the UNSC.
Remember, you may kill as many lives as you want but you may not, at any time, kill the law which governs the populace. So be it but God restores the cries of innocence with laughters!
