Rumbek Correspondent beaten brutally by SPLA soldiers
July 22, 2008 (RUMBEK) — Manyang Mayom, the Sudan Tribune correspondent in Rumbek, has been brutally assaulted by some Sudan People’s Liberation Army soldiers on July, 20, 2008.
The assault occurred while he was back to Rumbek from cattle camps at two kilometres from the capital of the Lakes state after covering the ongoing six month disarmament operation in the state conducted by southern Sudanese army troops.
The SPLA soldiers, who are belonging to some former militia leaders from outside the state and mostly do not speak Arabic or Dinka, stopped Manyang while he is back home during the night and asked him to get out of his car.
When the journalist who is known by the local authorities introduced him self, the soldiers immediately started to beaten him with guns without any exchange.
Late on the day after the attack, SPLA officials from Rumbek brought the journalist to Rumbek Hospital where doctors decided his referral to Khartoum for further treatment.
Manyang is the son of a SPLA soldier who scarified his live for the cause of southern Sudanese people and he is one of the first journalists working with the Sudan Tribune.
“Although this could be said to be an isolated incident, we condemns in the strongest terms such attacks on our staff members, who are doing their best to keep up with their reports about the daily implementation of peace in the country,” said Mohamed Nagi the Editor in Chief.
To put and end to decades of armed violence and cattle rustling, the Government of South Sudan has recently started a six month campaign to forcibly collect firearms from southern citizens. The forcible disarmament started in the Lakes State on July 10.

You should be carefully in this point of incidence because in South there are three well know violence clans first dinkas follow by Murle and lastly nuer, therefore if that action was not done by a dinka man it would have been a murle or nuer. Please check out and you will find it to be truth because those three clans are most attackers in South and we already knows that they are stilling revealing their secrets from each other. But one of the major things is that we need Kiir to open his eyes with problems of insecurity in South because this is absolutely stupid act.

I think you are just little crazy servant who work for one of the Dinka, Nuer or Murle’s commander homes assisting women with kitchen chors, and by finding tough mistreatment from those women, you have decided to talk bad about those tribes day and night at least to take out some of your frustrations away from your skiny chest. Go right now and get your shabby bag, bottle opener, beer mug, and your walking stick/cane & match your way to the bar before cold beer run out. Lastly, when you plan to visit Nuer, Murle or Dinka towns, Please leave all your traditional herbs behind otherwise, those cattle keepers will gouge your drinking eyes out off the socket. And stop insulting warmanias tiny sickish pullet.

Soldiers are usually given orders by some stupid high ranking people. There are a lot of stupid SPLA generals, I mean the type of Bol Madut. SPLA will never improve when these type of commanders(now generals) are torturing and killing fellow southerners.
Anyways, there will be no room for this in Anya-nya III.

Very sorry for SPLA behaviors and I hope SPLM must intervene if it’s not party to Manynag mistreatment.
However, Rumbek leaders should not allow this to happen any longer. We need peace, freedom and coexistence. SPLA have done their great part and it is time we start a new phase; democracy and prosperity.
Back to Illogic boy, you are frustrating readers and hopefully, Sudan Tribune will decide your fade. Believe me or not.

dear southerners, when will these brutal guys know that we are in the transitional period, unlike the past in which the journalist were deal with.this is the right time in which the army will be sensitized on the role of the media and the respect to the rule of law,so that they remain as a displine army which can protect the citizen rather than doing them harm. if they contunue doing such a thing,then they will lose the mission in which the SPLA was meant for.

To change your character from your fake cultures it will be a better way for you to improve yourselves. I would like to aware everyone that Mr. Manyang Mayom is the powerful journalist in Southern Sudan. He had been operating in Lakes state were there is serious censorship posted upon him by SPLM party. Manyang is saying the truth of which SPLM party doesn’t wanted it him to said so. Manyang is next hero to be remember in SOuthern Sudan by those young journalists growing up in Southern Sudan. He is the man of Journalistic ethnic and reasonable to write whatsoever around as wrong he saw. The SPLA are always confronting Manyang through heave payment been by opposition politicans in the state, but Manyang must overcome them. In 2003 Manyang report about the SPLM leadership wrong doing od which the SPLM current leadership in Rumbek doesn’t want Manyang to talk about. The SPLM leadership in GOSS should have take Manyang to work in GOSS for his safely live only. The Lakes state authority are most corrupts and Manyang is having all those secrete. Lakes state government fear Manyang interview over local Radio FM-98, Manyang ask strong question which are most wanted question by the listeners. I strong condemn the incident that Manyang fall upon it with stupid SPLA soldiers who are deprive with money by Lakes state weak politicians who have not good vision a head of them to do. I urge the Government of Southern Sudan to take care the right of strong journalists to be protect so that the can said right to the community. Let the GOSS encourage to train SPLA soldiers to respect journalist and to work toward CPA step in SOuthern Sudan.
I wish strong journalist Manyang Mayom must recover and to resume his duty normally and struggle continue with him. We look the vision of Southern Sudan upon Manyang report aways not like the local journalist coward reporting system in Rumbek local Radio- FM98.
