South Sudan gears up for IGAD summit on Sudan
November 27, 2023 (JUBA) – South Sudan is actively participating in preparations for an emergency summit of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) heads of state and government to address the ongoing crisis in Sudan. The regional bloc is playing a crucial role in efforts to restore peace and stability in the neighbouring country.
South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, James Pitia Morgan, confirmed on Monday that President Salva Kiir has directed the government to fully engage in the summit preparations.
“The IGAD secretariat is currently finalizing the summit agenda and is seeking input from member states,” explained Minister Morgan. “These inputs reflect the visions of the IGAD leaders on how they envision restoring peace and stability in Sudan.”
He further elaborated on President Kiir’s vision for a peaceful resolution to the Sudanese conflict. “President Kiir’s message is clear: the war in Sudan must end through peaceful dialogue. This is why leaders from various Sudanese groups have been invited to Juba for consultations and to share their perspectives. These consultations have included representatives of the groups that signed the 2020 Juba Peace Agreement, as well as the Forces for Freedom and Change. We are also seeking to engage with the Sudanese military leadership and the Rapid Support Forces.”
Minister Morgan commended the efforts of the regional and international community, along with the rival Sudanese factions, for their commitment to the peace process under the Jeddah platform. He disclosed that talks between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces continue under the auspices of the Saudi-U.S. mediation team, with the backing of the African Union, IGAD, and other international partners.
“These efforts are not intended to undermine Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity, or sovereignty,” emphasized Minister Morgan. “The mediation team encourages the parties to reach a consensus on a ceasefire to facilitate effective humanitarian coordination and delivery.”
South Sudan maintains that internal political issues require a deep and mutual understanding of the context. The country advocates for a Sudanese-owned and led peaceful dialogue, complemented by regional and international engagement and support.
