8 Sudanese Toposa killed in north-eastern Uganda – army

July 25, 2008 (KAMPALA) — The Ugandan army has killed eight Sudanese arms smugglers who tried to sneak into north-eastern part of Uganda, military spokesperson told the Chinese Xinhua.

The eight are members of southern Sudan’s Toposa ethnic group. The Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) said they were part of a group of 30 people who crossed into the border district of Kaabong from southern Sudan last week.

Since 2006, some 2000 people — according to the UN — from the pastoralist ethnic group have moved into north-eastern Uganda in search of pasture and water due to the long dray spell across the border.

The Toposa are now grazing an estimated 65,000 livestock in a 15 sq km area of Uganda’s Kidepo Valley National Park.

The Uganda Wildlife Authority expressed discomfort at the pastoralists’ presence because their weapons are superior and modern compared to those of the game wardens in the park and are concerned that the animals may spread diseases to wildlife.

But, the military spokesperson said the Toposa group was involved in arms trafficking into Ugandan territory.

“Their intention was gun trafficking but our combat squad was able to dislodge them, killing eight while the others fled back home,” Capt. Henry Obbo said. He further added that five sub machine guns were recovered in the encounter last Thursday.

Obbo said the UPDF has deployed patrol units along the borders to check on arms trafficking. He further said Sudanese Toposa crossed into Uganda in March this year to team up with another tribal group to raid cattle in the region.

The Toposa are based in eastern Equatoria near Sudan Kenya border. Last year they killed 54 people from Didinga tribe, a matter that raised calls for total disarmament of the different communities in the region.

Ugandan troops have done it well. It is a help to southern Sudan government because it has been crying out for disarmament but these primitive people did adhere. They think they are clever than the government which is why they advance to trafficking in Uganda unlike their killing in S.Sudan. They want to confuse the security situation of another country. Even if they were killed all, I would rather celebrate because they are people who do not listen and learn by action.

Jesus will come to save whoever listens and obeys God. Any of the GoSS officials who say ‘a,b,c…..’ is serving a blank interest and is highly suspected to be arming the local population of the South. He has to be dealt with accordingly.

Whoever thought there will be no reports of death, injuries and raiding is absolutely mad. Unless disarmament is implemented as decreed by President Kiir Mayardit we shall lost hundreds yearly.

Go to other parts of Southern Sudan where governors are very loyal to Kiir’s policy, their states are very smart. No more raiding and so on…………..

Eastern Equartoria State Governor is another traitor who does not respect GoSS policy, so suffer alone.

    What the hell with UPDF?

Last month they were accused of killing civilians in Magwi County and now they have killed 8 civilians accusing them of an arms trafficking.

We still doubt the way our late leader met his death upon arriving from your country and such a wound may takes time to heal so give us time or we shall decide something stupid that you will live to regret

    Take care!!

If you are thirsty for invading, then the return for satisfying your being is to double stroke your nerves. It’s always good for us to tame our ambition. Surely, could someone consider the action taken by Uganda Military to be an ill-treat to Toposa people. I believe the clear answer is NO. I think the UPDF play their role to protect the interest of their Citizen. If the accusation made was right, then I personally feel sorry for Toposa tribemen by taking a bull by its horn out of their living Zone. ” You can fool somebody somewhere, but you can not fools everybody everywhere”
