July 29, 2008 (WASHINGTON) — A Darfur rebel chief urged countries that support the suspension of Sudanese President’s indictment to not interfere in the work of the international justice and hinder its responsibilities.

Following the mobilisation of African, Arab and friendly countries to Khartoum like China and Russia, pressures are exercised on the UN Security Council to block for one year a decision by the ICC on whether to arrest Bashir.

“We call on the African, Arab countries as well as on China and Russia to allow justice to be done and not obstruct the work of the International Criminal Court. This is vital for peace in Darfur, the credibility of the court and the whole international system,” said the Sudan Liberation Movement chief, Abdel Wahid al-Nur.

He further questioned the suspension supporters “why they didn’t intervene to stop the genocide perpetrated by the armed forces and militias” when it happened.

Al-Nur, speaking from Washington, suggested to the African and Arab leaders to leave the international court conducting its prosecution and investigation while they mobilise the best of lawyers to defend the Sudanese president.

“They should not mix justice and politic”, he said adding “what they do increase the torment Darfur victims” he added.

The UN Security Council met behind closed doors to discuss extending the mandate of the joint UN-African Union (AU) force in Darfur which is due to expire on July 31st.

The extension which was supposed to be mere formality evolved into a full blown debate on deferring the indictment by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the Sudanese president Omar Hassan al-Bashir.

A number of countries wanted the UK sponsored UNAMID resolution to incorporate an affirmative decision to suspend ICC work in Darfur and not simply mentioning the possibility of it. The supporters of the Libyan proposal included China, Russia, South Africa, Burkina Faso and Indonesia.

Darfur rebel leader urges to not delay international justice
Abdal Nure, We wanted the Sudan President to prove him self innocent in the Hague no body said he is guilt until it’s being proved guilt, then he will be sentence. I didn’t understand why the China, Russia and the African Union supporting criminal cases like these. For African Union, all the leaders that are leading the Au are people like Bashir, they have killed a lot and committed the genocide that is why they are supporting criminals.
I am surely urging that the ICC, UK and the USA that the justice in Sudan should not be delayed. As it was mentioned and documented in the Principle of the court that in situation of justice the member of the court (ICC) must not work with nation, NGOS,or individual decision or advice. it’s an independent court and it should be left alone to take it’s course.
