Cholera in South Sudan kills 20, affects hundreds

August 4, 2008 (JUBA) — Cholera has seen a resurgence in southern Sudan, where 20 have died over the weekend following heavy rains that drove hundreds of thousands from their homes, a local official said on Monday.

Cholera, which has been in decline in southern Sudan until recent rains, has infected almost 6,000 people in the region and killed at least 44 this year in other parts of the semi-autonomous region.

“Twenty people so far died of a disease believed to be cholera over the weekend and many others are now admitted in Aweil hospital,” said Tong Aken Ngor a member of parliament for the Aweil area of Bahr al-Ghazal state in southern Sudan.

Ngor said some 250,000 people had been made homeless due to heavy rains that caused flooding and destroyed houses in the area.

Ngor said many people in the flooded areas had little food or shelter and called for urgent international help. Southern Sudan is emerging from a civil war after a peace treaty signed in 2005 that created an autonomous government for the region.

Cholera is a water-borne disease which causes vomiting and acute diarrhoea and can rapidly lead to death from dehydration if not treated.

A cholera outbreak in 2006 killed 700 people and affected around 25,000.

I believe that Cholera is now in the most favourite area for it to breath in as long as it can, if those people of that particular area are not serious about asking for other states to contribute it will be more worst than ever, because we knew that it was firstly on the ground of Juba (CES) but due to the seriousness of Equatoria people, cholera has never been as a dangerous challenge, but that area of Aweil should check help, I personal advice those people to check help as soon as possible before their people get into worst situation under gentleman of cholera. Can anyone really imagine how long that cholera has been existing in that area compared to just one week in EES and CES, very sad to hear. But i can understand why cholera keep existing over there.

Flood distroying our mudy huts and thus making our people homeless many and sick too with cholera from drinking dirty water!! what a shame! when GoSS and her corrupt and naive leaders including Salva Kiir and his vice Dr. Reik will start to give their waste of public fund and start to develop our country? if Kiir can’t afford to supply Aweil with clean drinkable water and people have to die with cholera, then, what he is going to tell them in the election day in order to gain their votes or he thought it will be like when he was given the presidency following the death of Garang!!

Hei guys, it’s a matter of death and life which is a concern for every patriotic man/woman. Whether cholera rock to any part of this region especially southern Sudan, this will affect every Southerner directly or indirectly whether your from Awiel or from Juba we are all one nation and one body in suffering. When people from Barha-El-Gazial are lazy it a duty of every southerner to go and training them how to produce food and preserve food. If an out break come like what has been announced by their leaders we should all search for the best formula to bring such out-break to the end.

You wicked wash your minds from tribalism otherwise you will never fight your common enemy in order to defend the sovereign south from invaders, by this I meant……….. Mr. Logic and LOBOI Awiel is your land and Young Dinka Equatoria is you land. You as the citizens of this semi-country have citizenship right to deliver services in any part of this land in regardless of where you come from or where your ethnic groups geographically are located. What is significate here is a behavioural change whcih comes gradually and it is the aspect of human beings believes in each other support in regardless of his tribe. Moreso we are sharing this website with the people whom we want to isolate them from our ecosystem whether politically and socially due to difference in our cultures and beliefs.

Please brothers do not mistake me to be northerners who always fool around with the word brother with ill motives. This advice has come deeply from my heart. We should stop and focus together for the betterment of our Land (southern Sudan). This shallow and local reasoning that most of you have become use to by reasoning along tribal line will never make you think big and rationally.

My points may be abusive to some people but this is the only language a tribalistic minded can understand. I know people like …… will reply me harssfully wihtout analysing my points from the perspective of nationalism.

    Thanks
